Show Nows The Time To Eradicate Peach Borers Now is the time to treat your peach trees to eradicate peach borers, according to A.L. Christiansen, county agent. He says that this pest does more damage in Weber County orchards than any other insect. Young borers are now at work, where tree and soil meet. They bore into the inner bark and gradually girdle the tree. Borers caused unthrifty trees, small fruit and dead trees. Orchards in Weber County are generally badly infested. This insect also attacks apricots, plums, prunes, cherries and ornamentals related to stone fruits. Heavy Looses Borers caused heavy looses of young trees. Evidence of damage by peach tree borers is a mass of gum mixed with sawdust like material extending from the base of the tree trunk at or near the surface of the soil. Effective control of the peach borer can be done by treating trees just following harvest of the Elberta peach corps. Soil temperature is right for effective control now. Use either ethylene dichloride or propylene dichloride emulsion. P.D.B. crystals are also effective. Growers are cautioned to use these chemicals as directed by the labels on the containers. |
