Tribune June 21 53 To Dad on His Day Boys think long thoughts on summer afternoons dreams of wealth and fame, of great careers and greater deeds. Of all the ambitions there is one which probably appears not at all to grow up to be the loving father of a loving family. And yet, luckily for the race, that is what most boys do exceptionally well. Americans have devised many holidays of their very own. One of the best, Fathers Day, falls upon this third Sunday of June. In comic strip and television comedy, mother knows best, sister knows best and brother knows best. Only father is the dub. It is all in fun; the humor is kind. But how far it misses the mark! When all is said and done, this is still a mans world, and, jokes to one side, dad is a very handy person to have around the home. He doesnt have to fight off Indians or go out and shoot a deer for dinner, but he keeps the family jalopy running, knows how to fix juniors bike and has a comforting way of holding little girls on his knee. Grandma would have bragged that he was a good provider. Mother doesnt use that expression, but shes mighty proud of the way he. sees that his family keeps abreast of the parade. So today we pay father his tribute. He knows hes loved, but he may not be aware of just how much. This is the time to show him. Those gray hairs, that slight stoop, those lines in the face came about because he was thinking and working for his home. Monday, June 22, 1953 Nice day. I have been home all day. Read some.
