Lynn Crookston & his mother and Wendy the child called this evening on their way to Logan. So glad to see Avon and she will stay a week or less days THE OGDEN (UTAH) STANDARD EXAMINER SATURDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 5,1953 Denver Driver Sets World Record at Wendover; Clocked at 255.41 MPH WENDOVER, Utah A new national hot rod speed record, set by the same car that made the old mark last year, was chalked up yesterday in the Bonneville National speed trials over Utahs Salt Flats. The Class E aluminum streamliner, driven by Willie Young of Denver, made two passes over the measured mile at an average speed of 255.41 mph, more than 10 mph faster than last years mark. The car, powered by two Ford V8 engines and churning an estimated 600 horsepower, is owned by Bill Kenz of Denver. Last year, the same car set the old mark of 244.66 mph until Friday the fastest speed ever attained by an American car using stock American parts. Class E is the meet's top speed class. Six other records were broken in the events sponsored by the Southern California Timing Assn. and Hot Rod Magazine. In the motorcycle division, Joe Simpson of Stockton, Calif., set a new record for U. S. Class A 61 inch cycles by averaging 160.69 mph to better Roland Frees 156.58 set over the same salt flats in 1950. Charlie Scott of San Bernardino, Calif., drove his Class B Ford engined Lakester at 201.02 mph bettering his own record set Thursday 190.38 mph. Guy Mabee of Midland, Tex., averaged 178.67 mph in his Chrysler engined sports car class roadster, hitting a high one way speed of 184.52. Other top speeds: Don Bishop of Torrange, Calif., 160.85 mph in his Class D coupe or sedan class Chrysler engined entry; Stephen Zimmerman, Murray, Utah, 124.29 mph in his Class D roadster, and H. Jerauld and H. G. Barber of National City, Calif., Ford engined Class O Lakester, 111.46 mph. Top speed for the Kenz special today was 256.045 mph on the eastbound mile. |
