Show Unclaimed Pots of Gold Ogden Standard March 10 53 Congressman Patman of Texas last Thursday told the House that a woman residing in his distict cant locate 5,000 which her son, who has lost his life overseas, told her he had deposited in a West Coast institution, neglecting to give the mother precise information. Patman was arguing for the creation of a bureau in Washington which would try to put persons with rights to the millions of unclaimed funds in banks and other places all over the land in touch with those holding the money. Some idea of the need for such a facility is to be found in the statement that the Veterans Bureau has 120,000,000 awaiting 600,000 veterans who cant be located. Also that there are at least 100,000,000 in unclaimed accounts in National and State Banks in the United States. The story of unclaimed wealth includes unclaimed government bonds which service men were induced to buy. They paid installments on the bonds, sometimes up to nine tenths of the amount due and then vanished. The government holds the thousands of bonds, waiting for word from the purchasers. Many corporations are searching for stockholders to whom money should be delivered, and Congressman Patman describes another group of missing owners of money, those who neglect to claim oil and gas lease payments in the oil regions of the country. So, as the Texan reveals, there are hundreds of millions of dollars lying in dormant accounts belonging to people who need it but do not know about the money or how to obtain information about it. If Mr. Patman gets his new bureau it should be called Rainbow Bureau on account of the pots of gold likely to be claimed therein. |
