Alumnews Michael P. Pluim, class of 1976, is a M Ist Lt. assigned to Marine Medium | copter Squadron 264, 2nd Battalion, § Marine Amphibious Unit, based at Lejeune, N.C. He joined the Marine (j 1920's Med iterranean deployment. in 1977 and is presently on an exte Wayne A. Jensen, class of 1926, was awarded the Boy Scout Silver Beaver Award recently. He had previously received Bird Haven District’s Award of Merit after having held various positions in adult scouting. He is immediate past district chairman and previously served as district advancement chairman. He is a retired general contractor, served for eight years on the Brigham City council, including a brief period as mayor, and has been an officer in the Lion’s club, Brigham City Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Box Elder Sheriff’s Jeep Patrol, Box Elder Wildlife Federation and state and local archery organizations. Wayne is a father of two daughters and resides with his wife, Velma, in Brigham City. 1 93 0's Thora [Astle] Nelson, class of 1933, has been selected to appear in the 13th Edition of Who’s Who in California. She is the owner of a printing business in Pittsburg , California, and is an author of many articles songs and a novel which is in the process of being published. Thora has also been very active in civic organizations in leadership positions and has conducted PTA choruses. Her husband is a patriarch in the Concord, California East Stake, Latter-day Saints Church, and was an executive in the United States Steel, Columbia Division. 1950’s Kenneth W. Charlesworth, class of 1950, has been named ‘“Utah’s 1981 Transporta‘tion Person of the Year.’”’ He is director of industrial chemical transportation for the Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corp. As a member of the WSC Transportation Advisory Committee he has encouraged young people in transportation careers for many years. Kenneth has been an interstate Commerce Commission practitioner since 1973, has held all offices in the Ogden Transportation Club, and is past president of the Utah Transportation Council. J. Ralph Macfarlane, M.D. class of 1951, is chairman of the board of directors of the recently merged organization of Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, whose combined assets exceed $31 million. Both corporations were founded in Utah in the early 1940’s and have been among Utah’s largest health insurers. Jan N. Bair, class of 1958, went on to earn a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from University of Utah; an M.S. in Hospital Pharmacy from University of Iowa; and back to Utah for a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from University of Utah. He is presently director of pharmacy services at University of Utah Hospital and an associate professor of hospital pharmacy. Honors awarded to him include membership in the Kho-Chi National Pharmaceutical Honorary Society; the First Annual Parenteral Drug Assn. award for outstanding research in the area of Parenteral Medications; the ‘‘Hospital Pharmacist of the Year’ award, presented by the Utah Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Co.; and co-recipient of the award for achievement in the professional practice of hospital pharmacy, presented by the A.S.H.P. Research and Education Foundation. Dr. Bair has published numerous articles in professional publications and has lectured widely on his research projects. He served nine years with the Bountiful J.C.’s, two years as an officer, and has been an active Boy Scout leader. In 1970 he was nominated for ‘Outstanding Young Men of America.” 1960's Richard S. Sharp, class of 1967, has been selected to appear in ‘‘Who’s Who in California.” He is Manager of Manufacturing Engineering at Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Sunnyvale. After graduating from WSC he earned an MBA at University of Santa Clara. He and his wife, Evelyn (Alexander) have four children. They make their home in Sunnyvale. Robert C. Coleman, class of 1969,. who is senior vice president and cashier at Box Elder County bank, has been elected to the bank’s board of directors. He has been with the bank since 1959. He is a former president of the Greater Brigham City Area Chamber of Commerce and Brigham City Industrial Commission and is presently a member of the Rotary Club there. He is married to the former Merle Williams of Ogden. They are parents of six children. Dean Hughes, class of 1967, recently published a children’s novel entitled, “Nutty for President,”’ with Atheneum Publishers of New York. He has previously published two historical novels about the struggles of the early Mormons in Missouri, the first, “Under the Same Stars,’’ appeared in 1979 and is now in its second printing. The sequel, ‘‘As Wide as the River,’’ follows the fictional Williams family through the diffi- culties of the Clay County period. The third novel in that series is now completed and will be titled “Facing the Enemy.” Two more novels by Hughes will be published in the coming year. Deseret Book will issue ‘‘Hooper Haller” in May. Atheneum Publishers has purchased the rights to another children’s novel which will be called “Honestly, Myron.”’ He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1972, after which he joined the English department at Central Missouri State University. He is currently on leave of absence from the university and is living in Provo, teaching part-time at Brigham Young University and devoting most of his time to writing. He and his wife, Kathleen (Hurst), a native of North Ogden, have three children. Dr. Roger K. Peterson, class of 1968, recently received a doctoral degree from Brigham Young University. His dissertation was entitled “Joseph Smith, Prophet-Poet: A Literary Analysis of Writings Closely Associated with His Name.”’ Roger is a Vietnam War veteran and winner of the Bronze Star. He was on active duty with the Army for two years and has been a reserve officer for 10 years. He is currently troop commander for the 328th General Hospital reserve unit. Currently he is a teacher at Bonneville LDS Seminary and an adjunct instructor in English at WSC. He has been the director of the LDS Institute of Religion at UCLA. He and his wife, Susan (Call) have six children. They live in Morgan, Utah. 1970's David W. Sill, class of 1970, has been named trust officer in the head office of Zions First National Bank. Prior to taking his new position he was a tax supervisor . with Zions. He and his wife, Linda, live in Centerville. They have three children. Mose Watkins, class of 1970, has been appointed to the Utah Technical College Salt Lake Institutional Council by Governor Scott Matheson. He jis director of the Clearfield Job Corps and a member of the Governor’s Black Advisory Council. Navy Lt. j.g. Mark : S. Kettlewell, cl 1978, was awarded the Navy Expeditiag W. Reed Holbrook, class of 1970, received a Master of Public Administration degree from Golden Gate University in 1980. He was promoted December 14, 1981, to Lieutenant Colonel as Director of Supply for Fourth Air Force, McClellan AFB, California. He and his wife, Teresa, and their son, Spencer, live in Citrus Heights, California. Steve C. Brown, class of 1971, has been appointed vice president in the real estate section of Bank of America’s North America Division. As a senior account officer in San Francisco, he is responsible for commercial real estate lending in Atlanta and the Washington, D.C. area. He lives in Emeryville, California. Stephen L. Empey, class of 1972, has been named assistant vice president and assistant manager of Utah Firstbank branch in the Brickyard Plaza, Salt Lake City. Douglas R. Edwards, class of 1972, was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer of Hillestead Corp, a private label manufacturer of food supplements in San Jose, California. Terry Lee Williams, class of 1973, is a member of the Utah State Legislature. He serves on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Transportation/Public Safety Committee. He is a native of Artesia, New Mexico, graduated from WSC with a degree in political science, and holds a master’s degree in economics from University of Utah. Prior to running for public office he was deputy director of Multi-Ethnic Corporation in Salt Lake City. Hyde, class of 1975, reside in Salt Lake City where he is employed as a buyer for ZCMI. Rick Lorenzen, class of 1977, has been elected as the president of the Utah Society of Respiratory Therapy. He is a certified respiratory therapist at St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden. Judy Mecham has been elected president of the board of directors of the Eccles Community Art Center. She has been a member of the art center’s board of directors since 1977. Judy is also a member of the Junior League of Ogden, and a member of the National Assn. of Bank Women.
