Show March 2003 Our city has experienced a "crime wave" recently. In March the home of June Meyerhoffer was burglarized while she was at the grocery store at midday. A safe, with important documents and stock certificates, was taken, along with jewelry, silverware, ornaments, a leather case of audio tapes and personal tapes. Most missed are personal and sentimental items which cannot be replaced. A large air compressor was taken from Danny Brown's property. An antique trunk was stolen from Nellie Baird's shed. A drive-by shooting, probably gang related, occurred just east of the L. D. S. Church. Three men were arrested for battering twelve mailboxes on Pioneer Road from 2700 West to 3400 West. At the March 20, 2003, Council Meeting, new business licenses were approved by the City Council for Midwest Wholesale Supply, Rachel's Silk Floral Design, Morrell & Sons, Inc., and Brian's Paint Ball Supply. A Conditional Use Permit for Adam Brandley for a home occupation business was also approved. A portion of 1200 West from 12th Street to 200 North will be closed from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on July 4. The parade scheduled as part of the city's celebration will proceed along this route, requiring the closure. A letter has been sent to Ogden City notifying them of this closure. This will allow time for them to plan ahead and inform the public of alternate routes to the fairgrounds for activities planned there. A resolution was passed at the meeting to form an ad hoc committee of community residents to recommend possible locations for a municipal building. Orvil Holley will serve as chair, and was asked to have some plans within six months. President Ilium wants the council and community to be involved in considering sites for the city office and a possible Senior Center. Mr. Ken Martin advised the council that Utah State University can take a random survey of residents' preference for a new municipal building, at no charge for the service. A resolution was passed directing the mayor to coordinate the additional access at the intersection of 400 North and 1200 West with Ogden City. Mr. Gaylord Gardner representing Ogden City discussed possible plans for the intersection to alleviate traffic problems. Mr. George Binford, Ogden City Traffic Engineer, has indicated that they will work with the city in all ways possible. At the request of Steve Mecham, Public Works, funds were authorized for the replacement or upgrade of the culvert on 700 South at the South Slaterville ditch. The ditch company must approve the work before it can be commenced. Mr. Bob Morris is the president of the South Slaterville Irrigation Company. Mayor Keith Butler reported that there are several volunteers for the CERT program, which is under Gerald Bischoff's direction. The mayor is now a non-voting member of the sewer board, so the city will have better knowledge of activities of the district. The EPA Storm Water fees are now in place and the process seems to be going well. Mr. Martin has talked with several businesses and residents about fees. He has found some businesses that do not have a business license and informed them it must be obtained. The signal light by Pilot Gas Station on 12th Street should be completed by the first of August this year. Bridge girders were placed over the Weber River which required 1900 West to be closed from 1350 South in Marriott-Slaterville City to 1555 South in West Haven for several days in March. This is part of the continuing construction on this highway. Ted Black, fire marshal for the Weber Fire District, believes a new county ordinance requiring fire sprinklers in homes over 5000 square feet, excluding the garage, in areas of inadequate water for fighting fires, is a "stop gap" |
