It's a Difficult Subject to Write About By GUNDA TIETJEN My assignment for this paper was, “What American eons do you enjoy?” It is pretty hard to write an article about something that is self-evident to us. That you have known all your life. It would be a lot easier if we just have gained the rights we are used to. Maybe the “Patriotism Week’ will help us to remember that not all the people all over the world have the same rights. I did not want to write this article, and nobody dictated to me, that I have to. I was just told that I should be able to say something about the freedoms we have. In an unfree country I would have got the order to write praise about freedoms I don’t even have. While I wrote the above, behind me some students have a lively discussion about their different religions. That shows two other freedoms we have: freedom of religion and freedom of speech. We don’t only have them guaranteed in the Constitution, but also practice them every day without being conscious of that. I have never found so many different religions in one state and that is only possible because there is no state church everybody has to belong to. There are hardly any prejudices and discussion can be held very objectively, as objective as it is possible when your beliefs are involved. Freedom of religion is not only written on a piece of paper, but also understood by the majority of the people. The freedom of the speech is another basic human right we use every day, not knowing how valuable this right would be for somebody who missed it all his life. Another example for this right is the Moratorium. People who are against the war in Vietnam are allowed to speak up. They have the right to demonstrate their opinion. On the other side, the people who are for the war, support the President or are against the Moratorium, may, say and show it, too. Everybody is allowed to say his opinions and demon strate them even if they differ from the government viewpoints and policies. Citizens have the right and sometimes it is even desired to take part in the politics, not only by electing state and federal politicians. That people should take active part in politics, must have been the wish of the ‘Fathers of the Constitution.” They gave us the rights 100 years ago and we shall accept them and show our gratefulness by living up to the standards they set a long time ago. 7 Opens Today ‘Tm an American —Say lt With NUMBER Left to right, Vicki Stone, Grant Watts, and Debbie Judd model the night shirts which are being sold by the Junior Class.
