Show Garrett Bass, was named King at the Baby Contest. Slater Bentley Jones, was selected as Queen, with Tiagen Draper and Alexis Maughan as princesses. The City Councilmen again prepared hamburgers and hot dogs which were sold to hungry and happy attendees. A giant waterslide, various games and booths, and a candy cannon entertained children young and old. Pie Eating Contests were held in various categories, during which 40 pies were devoured (not daintily or politely). Al Farr kept his well-deserved title in his age group. Pam Slater was again the general chair of the events. Those who attended any of the events give sincere thanks for everyone's hard work. An Evening of Music at the Park was held at the Marriott Park on July 21, 2007. Performing were members of the Pizzicota Strings, and James Elmer, and Matt Urry. Another Evening of Music at the Park was held on August 11, 2007, at the Marriott Park, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Cub Scouts from the Marriott-Slaterville L. D. S. Third Ward presented a song. The Wilson McConkie family, former residents of our city, delighted the audience with songs. They were followed by the original verse of our poet, Michael Murphy. Breakfast with Santa was again a great success. He arrived at the Senior for breakfast on December 8, 2007. Breakfast consisted of ham, eggs, pancakes, cereal and gingerbread, and was served to about 75 people. Children enjoyed visiting with Santa and making craft items. Shauna Meyerhoffer was in charge again, ably assisted by Stacee Meyerhoffer, Dean and Lois Slater, Karleen Warner, DeAnn Hufstettler, Susan Savage, Hannah Brandley, and Kirsten, Cara and McKenlee Davis. The annual Christmas party for the City Council and Planning Commission members, volunteers and partners, was held December 20, 2007, after the regular council meeting. A dutch oven dinner, prepared by Randy Phipps, was served to about 30 people. APPRECIATION AWARDS it is not possible to recognize all the volunteers, for all their work each year. However, it is possible to recognize some outstanding ones. Nominations for annual community awards were requested by Mayor Keith Butler, with a deadline of November 30, 2007. The awards are the Good Neighbor Award, the Elna Lucas Community Culture/History Award, the H. Orvil Holley Youth Leadership Award, and the Darrell Mecham Community Service Award. The winners of this year's Community Awards were honored at the City Council Meeting on December 20, 2007, when they were presented certificates by Mayor Keith Butler. The Good Neighbor awards were presented to Erin Holley, nominated by Kris Robrecht, and Dustin and Jannette Henrie, nominated by Kathy Dimick. The Elna Lucas Community History and Culture Award was presented to Carl Hodson for his multiple oral history interviews in detail, providing invaluable community history. The H. Orvil Holley Youth Leadership Award was given to Aubrey Dimick for her student leadership and example. The Darrell Mecham Outstanding Community Service Award was presented posthumously to Vernal Wardell for his tremendous service over the years at the Slaterville Park. Mr. Wardell passed away in January 2007. 14 |
