Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths (behind lung cancer) in the United States for both men and women combined. Screening tests are the most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer. Most cases of the disease begin as noncancerous polyps. These polyps can become cancerous if not removed and because there are often no symptoms related to polyps, it is important to be screened routinely to check for them. Along with regular screenings, here are some more tips to help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer: Maintain a healthy weight Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Regular exercise (Source: preventcancer.org) Tips For Exercise Success Our new Healthy Seniors exercise program is underway, so here are some tips to help you achieve your exercise goals: Park further away when parking and walk the extra distance. While watching TV, ride a stationary bike. Start slowly. Try two 15-minute sessions to meet your goal. Drink water before, during and after exercise. Ask someone to join you, you'll be more likely to stick to it. Remember to log your exercise and mail in your completed calendars to be entered for prize drawings. 39
