Show Shot at redemption Fremont golfers covet 5-A crown BY BRADY BINGHAM_ Standard-Examiner staff bbingham@standard.net The Silver Wolves want redemption. After taking a two-stroke lead into the final round of the state 5-A golf championships a season ago, Fremont High School failed to come away with the coveted title. A difficult second round of the 36-hole tournament left Fremont caught and passed by Skyline, which won the championship by five strokes. An older, wiser and deeper team from Fremont in '07 is eager for another shot. "These guys know how to handle adversity," said coach Bryce Ballif. "They are tournament-tested and I expect good things from this team. "Our top four have played a lot of tournament golf. It may be up to our fifth, sixth and seventh guys this year to step up," Ballif said. "Golf has gotten so good at this level, you have got to have five or six guys to win." The top three players from last year's Fremont squad are back. Seniors Denny Job and Jordan Herzog as well as junior Zac Blair each made the 5-A All-State Golf Team last year. The three join freshman Patrick Fishburn to make one of the strongest top four in the state. "We know we are the target," said Job. "Everyone is gunning for us. But that's OK." "It's our goal to go out to win every day," Blair said. "We would like to return to state and get another shot. We were pretty disappointed to lose to Skyline last year and don't want that to happen again. "I think we've got a good chance," added Blair, whose father Jimmy Blair, the owner of Mulligan's Golf and Games, has watched each of these young golfers grow up hitting balls at Mulligan's range.
