Show September 21, 2007 Eagle Mountain Golf Course in Brigham City. Below, Fremont's Zac Blair chips a ball at Eagle Mountain. Blair steps up for Silver Wolves in region win BY CHRIS CHRISTENSEN Standard-Examiner correspondent BRIGHAM CITY With the region title already secured as of last week, the only thing left for the Fremont Silver Wolves was to put an emphatic stamp on that title by winning the Region 1 championship tournament at Eagle Mountain Golf Course Thursday afternoon. And win is what they did. Led by the dynamic play of Zac Blair and Patrick Fish-burn, the Silver Wolves ran away with the title, winning by 11 strokes over second-place finisher Northridge. This is the momentum that coach Bryce Ballif was looking for heading into the state 5-A tournament to be held in two weeks at Soldier Hollow. "We talked to the kids about what it is going to take in order to come away not only the region title but what it was going to take at state as well," Ballif said. "We have had the likes of Zac, Patrick, Jordan (Herzog) and Denny (Job) finish in the top four on the team every week. But we also needed to have a couple of other players step up and play well, because that's what happens at the state tournament. "Sometimes one of your players is going to have an off day and you need others to fill right in. That is what we got today from Cody Wass and Ryan Sarlo. Denny was off (shooting 77) and both of those kids shot 72s. That is what makes a team." Blair was the star of a show that featured seven players under par and two more at even par for the day. He shot a blistering 64 to lead the way for Fremont. Fishburn, who also wrapped up the individual region title with his consistent play all year long, came in with a 69. Herzog, who earlier in the year had a 62 to his name, shot a 1-under 70 to be the third Silver Wolves' player to reach under par. The up-and-down round of the day may have belonged to Syracuse's Devon Purser. Purser only had two pars on the day, but shot a 2-over 73. He had seven birdies on the day, but also finished with nine bogeys. Teammate Cole Ogden was one of the seven players to finish under par when he came in with a 1-under score of 70. Northridge may have had a chance to win the final tournament in region play, but No. 1 player Alex Sutton shot an even-par 71 and Michael Harris chipped in with a 1-under 70. However, it was Eric Wright who had the round of the day for the Knights with his 3-under 68. Blair was one of the first players to finish his round for the day, along with playing partners Ogden, Sutton and Davis' Dustin Haws, who shot a 4-over 75. They played their round in just under four hours, which was almost an hour faster than the other slower players on the course. "It was nice to be able to play like that (fast)," Blair said. "The players that I was with were shooting well and having fun. That is what golf is about playing fast and having fun. It was much better than still being out there (as Blair pointed to the course)." Weber's Nick Thongrit also shot an under-par round of 69 to lead the Warriors, who based on their team scoring from the entire season of region play, became the fifth and final team to take their entire team to the state tour-nament. Fremont, Northridge, Syracuse, Davis and Weber will take their teams to the tournament this year. 178 |
