Show August 28, 2007 (Cont'd) "It's been really important to have a facility like (Mulligan's) where they can play and practice for free," Ballif said. "These guys have put in a lot of work there and we owe a lot of thanks to Jimmy." While Ballif knows he has a strong team this year, he has also been cautious to not let his squad get overconfident. "We were second at state last year and I think maybe we have won region five times. While that's nice, it doesn't really mean a lot," Ballif said. "We talk about this a lot. I know it's cliche, but we really have to take it one match at a time, one shot at a time. There are a lot of good players, good teams out there. We can't get too far ahead of ourselves. We've got to take care of business." Ballif said he often reminds his team of all the talent around them at opposing schools. As coach at Fremont for 14 years now, he said the talent level is far deeper than ever. "I am amazed at how good these kids are," Ballif said. "It used to be that if you put up a team total of 300-310 that would win easily. Now, that score is only good for about fourth or fifth." Although the top four scores are recorded during region tournaments and the state championship, Ballif knows how important it is for the entire team to play well. That's why he's working hard with the other half of his squad, which includes five sophomores. Cody Wass, Ryan Sarlo, Landon Foulger, Mason McGuire and Addison Delcarlo are being counted on to provide solid depth to Golfers to watch Zac Blair, Fremont Ben Broadhead, Box Elder Patrick Fishburn, Fremont Nick Flores, Layton Corbin Gale, Box Elder Taylor Haws, Davis Jordan Herzog, Fremont Denny Job, Fremont Cole Ogden, Syracuse Troy Owen, Woods Cross Devon Purser, Syracuse Alex Sutton, Northridge Nick Thongrit, Weber Joe Wight, Box Elder Layne Wilde, Ogden the Fremont squad. "Golf is kind of an individual sport, but in high school it's about the team," Ballif said. "Winning is important only because of the team concepts. "These guys are really close to each other. They play a lot together and pull for each other," Ballif added. Ballif believes that team concept ought to pay dividends this year when Fremont returns to take its shot at the state 5-A title, scheduled for competition October 1-2 at Soldier Hollow. One of Fremont's toughest competitors at state may come from within their own region, as Northridge boasts a very strong team led by Alex Sutton, and Davis' Taylor Haws had the Darts on target. Individually, freshmen Devon Purser and Cole Ogden will lead Syracuse High in its first season of competition. Region 5 has already evolved into a solid battle battle between Bonneville and Box Elder, with the Bees gaining the upper hand so far. Region 11 teams have trailed Logan in most of the invitationals thus far, but Ogden and Morgan boast several strong individuals. Leonardi Leonardi Imogene H.
