Show The Pioneer Post Volume IX Issue 9 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter September 2007 Mayor's Message Recently you received your property tax notice, and in most cases that included some sticker shock increases. I take this opportunity to remind you that our city does not impose any of those taxes on your notice, nor does our city set the tax rates. Our city is one of the only cities in the state that does not impose a property tax. We have been able to do this for years because we have carefully planned a balance between commercial business and residential that will allow us to continue this trend so long as we follow our community's General Plan. Also, we have avoid imposing property taxes by having frugal fiscal management and from the help of volunteers who assist with city activities. As such, we are the envy of many other cities since we have no debt, no bonds, and no property tax. On another issue, in the near future the sewer plant will start some major construction upgrades. This will impact our roads with heavy truck traffic coming and going from the sewer plant, and excavations in the roadways. I have coordinated with the sewer plant to mitigate impact where possible. However, there will be impact on our otherwise quiet and rural roads. Please be aware of this situation and drive carefully. _Keith H. Butler, Mayor_ Fall Planting by Jonathan Saunders - Bad Kat Landscapes Fall is just around the corner. As temperatures drop during the month of September it is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. When planting a tree, there are several steps to follow: 1. Prepare the soil. Plants need air and water so loosen up the soil. 2. Select the right tree. After the soil is prepared select the right tree or shrub for your soil conditions (sand, clay, check the ph) and exposure (north, south). The City Tree Brochure is available at the city offices for your convenience and provides a good list of trees to select from. 3. Transporting trees. When transporting plant material, do it during the cool part of the day and keep it covered. 4. Digging the hole. Dig planting hole 2 times the width of the pot or root ball. Plant no deeper than the original nursery level. 5. Planting. Remove tree from the pot, remove burlap, and loosen the roots. Backfill around plant material and make sure the soil is firm and well watered, only stake if necessary. 6. Watering. Water weekly, and water slow and deep. Plant material is susceptible to drying out until established, so you may have to water on occasion during dry winter periods. Trees are prized and valued in our community. Trees benefit us all by moderating climatic extremes, helping conserve energy, clean the air and reduce pollution, reduce noise, attract wildlife, and improve appearance. Enjoy your fall planting this year. If you have a question feel free to call Jonathan Saunders at 391-2129._ Local Updates UDOT 12th Street Reconstruction.
