Show _ PAGE 2 HIGHLANDER Boys, Watch What You Say! PREFACE F — “Oh Beautiful for Spacious What?” By KATHY Dear JOHNSON a little less deliberate disrespect. How many people do you know who willing stand up for the National Anthem at a football game without grumbling a little? The only people I ever see jump up are the football players, and that might be because they are anxious to start playing or maybe their pads are cutting off their circulation. The next time you hear “America, America,” try listening to the words and see if you can’t make some sense out of it. Maybe “Oh, Beautiful for Spacious Skies” may not mean much. We’re crammed in here pretty close and the beautiful sky is stained dingy gray. You may never have seen amber waves of grain. The mountains have never seemed purple to me and the only fruits I see on this plain are people I dislike. , But listen to the rest of the song. Doesn’t it still apply? for all Comments on members on ‘Wednesday, November 26, after school in Room may the be 39. Clan cards purchased for $3.00 in bookstore. These are the same high school seniors who will be drafted within the next two years unless they find a good excuse or some place to hide. The definition of patriotism (as the dictionary states) is love of country. I hate to say it, but patriotism is falling down in this school. Falling isn’t the word. Over the edge and into the abyss describes it more accurately. When I was a sophomore, an announcement was made over the P.A. system to the effect that not enough respect was given to the flag. Whenever the flag was being raised or lowered, anyone in the area was to stand at attention with his hand over his heart. Fine, we needed more respect for the flag, but there was no reward or punishment for complying. Soon after the announcement was made, the P.A. system had one of its frequent fits, and for all we knew, Mr. Alley was swallowed up. Nothing was said again. So much for love of flag. This year, as far as I can remember, disrespect for ROTC is at an all-time high. I’m not saying I like ROTC, they’d probably try to draft me into the Girls’ Drill Team. But ROTC is stil a branch of the armed forces, isn’t it? _ Of course, I may be asking the impossible. How can the rest of us respect these men in uniform if they don’t respect the uniform themselves? It’s probably not so much respect we need as meeting MONDAY, of the guys’, or should I say boys’ manners at Ben Lomond. Maybe they think they are cool, but filthy | something mouths are nothing to brag ‘about. Especially when they start talking about girls they know nothing about. The other day I was walking home behind a girl I know personally. Some boys from B. L. were sitting in back of Highland Junior. When she went by, they called her some filthy names. I wouldn’t even write them on paper. I know this girl and she’s nowhere near what they were calling her. What are they trying to do? Do they feel like they’ve really got something to spread? All I can say is that if this is the kind of guys we have at B.L. no girl’s name or reputation is safe, or do we have a. school! We often think of Thanksgiving as an American holiday, begun by the Pilgrims in Plymouth in 1621. At that time, so the story runs, the survivors of the Mayflower passengers celebrated their first harvest in the new world, with a feast to which Gov. Bradford invited the Indian Chief Massasoit and ninety of his braves. This was the first Thanksgiving of our world. year in Plymouth, they were grateful for the friendship of the Indians who could have destroyed them. The Pilgirms also introduced the idea or custom of eating turkey on Thanksgiving day. They found turkey in great numbers and good to eat. We adopted the custom although turkeys are no longer wild, nor free. Strangely enough in the U.S., Thanksgiving day is not established as a legal holiday. The President of U.S. has to proclaim it each year, and can shift the date from the fourth Thursday in November to third, or any other day he wishes. Thanksgiving is one of the oldest holidays known to mankind, for celebration of the annual harvest. Different nationalities celebrate on different dates, and in different ways. The Pilgrims brought the ‘harvest in” to mass. They gave it a slightly new meaning, since they were a lot more thankful, for more than just a good harvest. On the first day of the No matter what time, or day of the year, I think we all agree Thanksgiving is one of our bestknown holidays. Ninety-nine per cent of the girls at B.L. are great. A country can’t be all bad when some of its people can take a stand completely contrary to the government, in a public place, and get away with it. And what’s more, even though they may not agree with what they say, the older generation (with a few exceptions) uphold their right to say it. There may be hope for us yet.
