The APRIL 1, 1970 liberty of the press is a blessing when we are inclined to write against others and a calamity when we find ourselves overborne by the multitude of our assailants. —Samuel Johnson Ideas Being Translated into Action On Student Lounge Proposal After much discussion and contemplation on the part of the administration and student body, ideas are finally turning into action regarding Ben Lomond’s future student lounge. Severai new developments have taken piace since the Highlander first started pressing for a longe in December. Last week the Student Council passed a resolution stating that the student body of Ben Lomond felt the need tor a student lounge, with the most logical place being the south end of the existing library. Tnis resolution was then forwarded to Supuerintendent Garner. In talking with Dr. Drechsel a few days ago about the matter, he mentioned several different proposals that were being considered. The most tavored proposal at the present time is to use the north end of the library as a teachers’ lounge with the remainder given to the students. He also sug- gested that the lockers on the wall of the library and the wall itself be torn away to make the room more accessible and also similar to the ‘commons area” that is being inclded in the new Weber High School. NEW CAFETERIA Another very tentative, yet very possible proposal is to construct a new cafeteria in the middle of the school. Yet the same people will also have to be cut, are elected every year. { very of the No—4% Judicial lounge should Council patrol- vote. The first change we feel necessary is the item concerning the grade point average of a student officer. According to the proposed constitution, an officer will be put on probation if his grades drop below a 3.0 average during any term and he will be asked to resign if they drop below 2.0. This means an officer can drop to a 2.1 average and still be an officer except on probation. According to Dr. Drechsel, over one half of Ben Lomond’s entire student body is above a 3.0 average. Therefore, we feel that the constitution should be changed to read that if an officer’s grades drop below 2.5 during any term he should be asked to resign, rather than the proposed 2.0 in the constitution. We feel that even though an officer has extra special work loads and sometimes lets down scholastically, this person has an obligation to be within the top one-half to two-thirds of the student body of the school. The second objection is the election by the student body of the Lad and Lassie of the year. We feel that the original plan for their election be followed as in the past. Otherwise, the entire thing could turn into a so-called “popularity contest.” We feel the new constitution as a whole is a tremendous achievement for the Executive Council. However, we feel that these changes be carefully considered by every member of the Student Council before approving the Constitiution. |
