Show Senior Information, October 2007 Senior Health Connection newsletter Intermountain October 2007 What You Should Know About The Flu What is influenza (also called flu)? The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. Every year in the United States on average: 5-20% of the population get the flu More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications Approximately 36,000 people die from the flu Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but getting vaccinated in December or even later can still be beneficial since most influenza activity occurs in January or later in most years. (Source: CDC) will cost approximately $25 unless eligible Medicare card is presented. Healthcare professionals will be on site to answer questions. Please join us October 25 from 9-12 p.m. or McKay-Dee and the Senior Health Connection will be hosting a health fair October 25 and 26. Flu shots, cholesterol and glucose screenings, and much more will be offered. Flu shots October 26 from 1-4 p.m. Prize drawings and refreshments will be available.
