Dale Gardner has directed that edifice since it was built and defends the building’s function. See story on page 5S. Graduation exercises were preceded this year by the dedication of a new wildcat statue, and by the first WSC fishing derby for handicapped children. All three events served to kindle increased pride in the school among students, staff and alumni. See stories and photos on pages 6 and 7. Robert H. DeBoer, assistant to the president for governmental relations at Weber State, has been named acting vice president for college relations. WSC President Stephen D. Nadauld made the appointment to allow time to conduct a national search for a permanent vice president. DeBoer replaced Dean W. Hurst, who has been vice president for college relations since 1978. Hurst recently announced his phased retirement. DeBoer first came to Weber State in 1953 as a purchasing agent. He left the college to take a similar position at Idaho State University, but returned to the Ogden school in 1965. He was the purchasing agent at Executive Editor Howard G. Noel Editor Craig V. The $263,000 project will have a tremendous impact on learning, Drs. Patrick Henry and Maurice Burke say. See story on page 9. Weber State until 1972 when he became deputy controller. He served in that capacity for eight years and then was appointed director of business affairs. DeBoer was in that spot for one year before becoming assistant to the vice president as well as director of administrative services for college relations. He is a member of the Western Association of College and University Business Officers, a past vice president of the Utah League of Cities, and for two years was assistant Mayor of Ogden. Currently he is in his sixth term on the Ogden City Council. Weber is also a certified public accoun- He taught accounting at ASU, BYU and Utah State University, and_ has served as auditor for several private companies in Utah and Nevada. **T think my background in finance, business and education will prove useful. I’m looking forward to contributing to the college and applying my background and experience,’’ he said. Dr. Simkins is a member of the Western Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a member of the American Accounting Association, Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma. He serves on the boards of the Ogden Area Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau of Utah and the Weber State Credit Union. He is also on the Utah Committee on Education Against Fraud. Simkins, formerly dean of the Weber State School of Business and Economics, has_ been named vice president for business affairs. The college’s Institutional Council made that announcement during a special meeting in June. Dr. Simkins replaces Dr. Jerald T. Storey who has been a vice president since 1972. Dr. Storey is stepping down as vice president to return to the classroom. ‘*T feel that with 67 candidates being solicited for the job from around the U.S. that I can come into the position with a great deal of confidence. I feel much more elated than had it been just an internal search,’’ Dr. Simkins said. Dr. Simkins has been dean of the ‘School of Business and Economics at Weber State since 1983. Prior to that he served as associate dean for two years. He came to Weber State in 1976 as chairman of the WSC department of accounting. He received his master’s degree from Brigham Young University and _ his doctorate of business administration from Arizona State University in 1976. !
