WSC physicists and students will look at such particles thanks to anew nuclear physics lab. See story on page 4. Quality literature is like finding buried treasure, but many books today are more gold for fools than anything of substantive value, says English professor Gordon T. Allred. His article looks at literature and how to recognize something of value. See page 5. ~~ = = © The Weber State That Almost Wasn't It was the college's darkest hour. The legislature had signed a bill returning the college to LDS ownership, a move many claimed would end in the school’s closure. A general election referendum spearheaded by the Ogden Chamber of Commerce and the StandardExaminer was the only hope to keep WSC a State school. See story on page 6. In this atmosphere of cynicism it’s easy to understand why some alumni and members of the academic community are beginning to doubt the wisdom of a full commitment to college athletics, especially at a time when funds are tight across the board. Phil Tuckett, vice president of NFL Films and a former WSC football athlete looks at whether college sports should run with the ball or get thrown for a loss. See page 8. The week of Oct. 24-31 alsofeatured are-creation of the traditional hike tothe top of Mt. Ogden. The week ended when WSC played the University of Idaho Vandals. The Wildcats lost the game 31-28, butlater gotrevenge when they beat the Vandals 59-30 toknock Idaho out of theNCAA I-AA playoffs and advance to the quarter-finals. (Seestory on page3.) |
