Show Weber State College Comment, October 1989, Page Alumnews 1973 Dr. Michael J. Meldrum, of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in Gainesville, Fla., is one of 38 scientists and physicians who have received grants totalling nearly $1 million for biomedical research on aging. The grants came from the American Federation for Aging Research. Dr. Meldrum received approximately $25,000 for a oneyear project. He will investigate how aging may change the function of the nero transmitter glutamate. He is interested in whether damage to brain cells may be caused by certain age-related changes. He and his 37 colleagues were chosen from more than 140 applicants by the American Federation for Aging Research, chaired by Dr. Leonard Hayflick, a worldrenowned researcher in aging. SPS for the MAC Outstanding Security Police Unit Award in 1981; contributing member of the 51st SPS for the 5th Air Force and PACAF Outstanding Large SP Unit awards in both 1983 and 1984. Maj. Eldard is married to the former Robyn L. Tollestrup of Layton, and they have one daughter, Jamie and a son, Keith. They are being reassigned to Fort Leavenworth, Kan. where he will attend professor of dental hygiene at Weber State. She received her masters degree from the University of Utah in 1987. 11984 Army Command and General Staff College. Nikole Poulsen graduated from the University of Utah in: December 1988 with a masters of science degree in nursing. She is currently employed by the University of Utah Medical Center and Primary 1975 Childrens medical center as a neonatal nurse practi- David K. Beyer was recently promoted to regional vice president with A.L. Williams. Upon promotion Mr. Beyer, his wife Janet and their five children moved from North Carolina to Livonia, Mich. where he is now building his own marketing business through A.L. Williams. A.L. Williams is a financial services company. 1974 Major Rickard K. Eldard assumed command of the 3245th Security Police Squadron on Jan. 8. The Battlecreek, Mich. native received his masters of arts degree in business management from Central Michigan University in 1982 after graduating from Weber State. He has completed Squadron Officers School and Air Command and Staff College through correspondence. Maj. Eldard entered active duty in 1975. His past assignments include: shift supervisor of flight security officers at Malmstrom AFB in Montana; shift commander at Incirlik air base in Turkey; operations officer at Dover AFB, DE; operations officer at Osan air base in Korea, and chief of Cruise Missile Security Systems and Physical Security Systems Directorate at Hanscom Air Force Base in Maine. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with silver oak leaf cluster, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the USAF overseas Short Tour Ribbon, the USAF Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, the USAF Longevity Service Ribbon with two devices, the USAF Formal _ Training Ribbon, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon with device. Other accomplishments include: contributing member of the 3436th ee ee ing degree from Seattle University in July of 1989. She currently resides with her husband, George, 1976 class of 81, in Edmonds, Wash. Robert. E. Tarkalson received a masters of science degree in environmental studies at the Spring 1989 commencement exercises of the University of Montana. He designed his own interdisciplinary program to integrate scientific, humanistic and social understandings of the environment. Mr. Tarkalson currently resides in Missoula, Mont. 1978 Frances L. McConaughy was appointed trustee for District X in the American Dental Hygienists’ Association at the District X Regional Meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. in May. She will represent the dental hygienists in Utah, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. Craig V. Nelson Editor Weber State College Ogden, Ut 84408-1010 r Gregg L. Hadlock was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Aug. 1 following his graduation from Z (2. Camp Adventure, the Army ROTC Advanced Camp conducted by Fourth ROTC Region Headquarters at Fort Lewis. He was one of 313 cadets who completed the training and evaluation on that date and one of only 13 who were commissioned following the completion of remaining academic requirements. Ms. Poulsen is also the current president of the Utah Association of Neonatal Nurses. Former students of Weber State are eligible to join the WSC Alumni Association and should receive a letter from the organization outlining benefits of membership. Membership fees are $15 per year per person or $25 per couple. Benefits include free use of the WSC Stewart Library, and discounts to most theatre and cultural productions, movies at the Shepherd Union Building, discounts on merchandise at the WSC Bookstore and to continuing education programs, and the ability to purchase membership at the Swenson Gym and assistance with job searches though the career placement center. The Comment is distributed free to all formerstudents regardless of membership in the Alumni Association. The 1989 graduating class receives a free alumni membership if they apply prior to Dec. 1.
