The Richard and Shirley Hemingway family and the Glasmann foundation each have donated $1 million for educational programs and scholarships at the college, bringing the total thus far in the campaign to over $14.5 million. S Journey on the River Styx “From a distance we feel strongly that a man should be executed for his crimes, (but) what would happen if that distance were to be lessened?” WSC sociologist L. Convocations The 1988-89 Centennial Year has brought a number of steller lecturers and entertainers to Weber State, including political satarist Mark Russell and former death row inmate Randall Adams. Russell evoked laughter and Adams sobriety as the two helped round out Weber State's year-long birthday John S. Hinckley, campaign chairman said, “The needs of Weber State College and its students are many, and these two gifts will go far in helping young men and women get a good education and prepare themselves to contribute to our society.” He added, “We are excited to have reached our stated goal and eager to continue the campaign in the months ahead, in order to strengthen the educational programs at Weber State. Hopefully these two most recent gifts will stimulate other prospective donors to get on the Centennial Bandwagon, so to speak, as we continue to build a foundation for the future of the college.” Members of the Hemingway family contributing to the fund include: Richard K. and Shirley Stranquist Hemingway and their children, Henry, Jane, Helen, Ann, and daughter-in-law, Cathy. The endowment, called the “Hemingway Faculty Trust” will be funded by the donors through annual contributions over the next five years, until a total of $1 million is reached. Weber State President Stephen D. Nadauld said according to the letter of agreement, interest from the fund will be directed towards providing additional benefits for college faculty members through financial recognition, awards, and incentive programs designed to maintain and enhance the quality of instruction at WSC. “The Richard and Shirley Hemingway family have chosen to address one of the most critical issues facing our institution Bush Young Entrepreneurs Four years out of college and WSC graduate Chad Olson is worth over $50 million. Nadauld visited Washington, D.C. recently he happened to have a 10-minute discussion with a White House official where he mentioned Weber State’s Centennial. The next thing Pres. Nadauld knew he got a letter in the mail from President Bush. “Kind of a nice surprise, and it really speaks positively of (Assistant to the President) Stephen Studdert that he would remember our conversation and follow up,” Pres. Nadauld said. The college received a letter from both President Bush and Studdert. “Since its inception a century ago, WSC has provided quality liberal arts education to students from all over the country. What was once a small institution is now acenter for quality education and research offering study in 98 fields spanning seven schools,” Studdert wrote. “IT am pleased to echo President Bush’s message of congratulations to you, the students, faculty and distinguished alumni of Weber State College. May you forever prosper under the bright skies of the State of Utah,” he added. The letter from Pres. Bush (included here) was inserted into the graduation programs and noted by Pres. Nadauld during commencement exercises.
