Show 14 University Police/Parking/Safety Location: Annex 5 Telephone: 626-6460 Chief of Police: Lee Cassity The University Police department is concerned with providing a safe and secure environment for students, personnel, facilities and campus visitors. Services provided include security of the residence halls, including parking lots and grounds; public safety with regard to crime and traffic accidents; management of campus parking, including the sale of parking passes; and other campus safety and environmental health programs. Upward Bound Support Services Location: Annex 10 Telephone: 626-6798 Coordinator: Dave Trujillo Upward Bound Support Services is designed to provide financially assisted educational experiences for selected high school students in Davis and Weber Counties. Program personnel offer both a summer residential program at the university, and a follow- up academic-year program at five target high schools. Veterans Affairs Location: Miller Administration Building, lower level, Room 103 Telephone: 626-6040 Coordinator: John Vickroy The Veterans Affairs (VA) office is the liaison between Weber State University and the VA Regional Office. All veterans and dependents eligible for benefits under the G.I. Bill are certified for pay through this office, whose responsibility it is to monitor their progress. Veterans Affairs also coordinates with various campus departments to provide veterans and their dependents with a support system for successful educational experiences and the achievement of their goals. Veterans Upward Bound Support Services Location: Annex 2 Telephone: 626-7173 Coordinator: Jim Kopecky Veterans Upward Bound Support Services is designed to increase the number of veterans who enter and graduate from college. It provides qualified veterans academic support services that assist them in developing the academic skills necessary to be successful in their post-secondary education experience. Student Involvement Associated Students (ASWSU) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Judy Hurst The Associated Students of Weber State University (ASWSU) has a two-fold purpose: to represent the concerns, needs and desires of the student body, and to assist in the development of students. ASWSU is the university's official representative for all fee paying students and is committed to aggressively pursuing comprehensive internal and external student representation. ASWSU acknowledges dissimilar opinions by attempting to achieve a broad-based representation. ASWSU provides and supports programming and activities designed to involve and enrich the student body. ASWSU provides students with a variety of services and opportunities for community interaction and co-curricular learning unique to a campus setting. ASWSU is responsible to the student body of the university and provides answers and, whenever possible, solutions to student questions and concerns. Association of Registered Organizations (ARO) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Stephen Hunt Over 100 clubs and organizations provide students with opportunities to put their education to work. Through such activities as our quarterly Welcome Weeks, the Association of Registered Organizations serves as a liason between its member groups and the University at large to promote and highlight the various benefits of involvement and participation. Whether your interests are academic, professional, civic, athletic, religious, political, cultural or social, students are encouraged to augment their collegiate experience by joining an ARO group. ASWSU Student Senate Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Tim Kamenar The Student Senate is the elected representative body of the Associated Students. There are seventeen senators, eight academic and nine non-academic. These constituencies include: Applied Science & Technology, Arts & Humanities, Black Students, Business & Economics, Education, Health Professions, Latino-Chicano- Hispanic Students, Honours, Integrated and General Studies, International Students, Native American Students, Non-Traditional Students, Students With Disabilities, Residence Halls Students, Science, Social & Behavioral Sciences, Traditional Students, and Veteran Students. Senators are involved in every aspect of University life including University Academic and Administrative Standing Committees, Faculty Senate, Student Fees, and campus programming. Student Senate meets every Monday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Weber State University 15 Campus Activities Board (CAB) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Lisa Lisiecki For students who want to make the most of their college experience, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) is the ideal opportunity. CAB is comprised of eight student committees which plan, promote, and produce over 170 events each year, including weekly movies, nationally known entertainers, spontaneous midday events and annual events. Committees include: Campus Cinema, Cultural Programs, Family Programs, Midday, Off Broadway, Special Events, Super Events and That's Entertainment. College Bowl Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Tim Kamenar College Bowl is a form of Jeopardy-with-an-Attitude as the Varsity Sport of the Mind. College Bowl consists of teams formed from clubs, honor societies, Greeks, or groups of friends which compete for campus honors and cash awards. The winning team and top players have an opportunity to represent Weber State in a regional tournament. Each team's knowledge and aptitude are tested on a variety of subjects, including history, mythology, current events, mathematics, international relations, literature and sports. Family Concert Series Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisors: Judy Hurst and Lisa Lisiecki The Family Concert Series presents quality entertainment at affordable prices for the benefit of the metropolitan Ogden area and the Weber State University community. Students are actively involved in selecting entertainment options. Family Activity Card Location: Shepherd Union Business Office, Room 230 Telephone: 626-7123 The Family Activity Card is available for students with dependents for the price of $10.00 per quarter. It admits a family into Weber State sporting events, Campus Activities Board activities, and selected Performing Arts programs. This card requires a picture I.D. for each family member, which is obtained at the location listed above. Greek Life Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Stephen Hunt Fraternities and sororities have been active at Weber State since 1935. Membership in these organizations provides students the opportunity to build life-long friendships through a mutual commitment to involvement in programs and activities as well as providing students with support in their academic efforts and opportunities for leadership. Three fraternities - Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Gamma Chi - and three sororities - LaDianaeda, Lambda Delta Sigma, Otyokwa - are actively involved in offering these opportunities to all students. Intramurals Location: Department of Campus Recreation Health and Physical Education Center (HPEC), Room 21 A Telephone: 626-7967 Coordinator: Lesa Moore The objective of intramural programming is to promote social interaction and fellowship within Weber State through a wide range of competitive and recreational sports. Participation opportunities are offered in individual, dual, and team sports for both men and women. Many activities are also offered on a co-ed basis. Informal Recreation Location: Department of Campus Recreation Health and Physical Education Center (HPEC), Room 21 A Telephone: 626-7967 Coordinator: Lesa Moore This program provides the campus community the opportunity to use a variety of facilities for drop-in recreation. Facilities include a swimming pool; ten (10) racquetball courts; seven (7) outdoor tennis courts; conditioning areas (weights/aerobics); gym floors (basketball/volleyball/tennis); a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; aerobics classes; strength training; play fields; and an outdoor, one- mile exercise trail. Facility schedules are available at the HPEC complex. Current Weber State ID or Family Activity cards are required for entry. Open Hour Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Tim Kamenar Open Hour is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Thursday. This time is set aside for the campus community to take advantage of the various programs available. The design for Open Hour is broad in nature and consists of campus, departmental, and organizational activities. The Open Hour is designed to achieve two basic goals: to expand the educational and cultural horizons of the Weber State University campus community, and to create and enhance the sense of community at WSU by fostering increased interaction and mutual support between faculty, staff, students, and the community. Formal programs during Open Hour include: Convocations Lecture Series This convocation series supplements formal classroom education by bringing in speakers of national stature and/or authorities in diversified areas. Attendees have the opportunity to examine specific issues, be introduced to famous people and their lifestyles and values, and explore new and unique ideas. Issues Forum The Issues Forum uses debates between members of the campus community, panel discussions, seminars, and question and answer sessions. The goal of this program is to enhance critical thinking and stimulate thought on a variety of topics, from local political issues to basic philosophical questions, and expose the campus community to scholarly dialogue.
