Dental Hygiene BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH SCIENCES DEGREE (B.S.) » Program Prerequisite: Completion of the requirements for the Dental Hygiene A.S. degree. » Minor: Required. » Grade Requirements: All courses required for the major must be successfully completed with a grade of "C" or better (a "C-" grade is not acceptable). » Credit Hour Requirements: A total of 180 credit hours is required for graduation—140 of these are taken for the A.S. degree and an additional 8 must be taken to complete the Advanced Dental Hygiene Major. A total of 60 upper division credit hours is required (courses numbered 300 and above) — 36 of these are taken for the A.S. degree, and the additional 8 that must be taken to complete the Advanced Dental Hygiene Major are upper division. Sixteen more upper division hours are generated by the student's chosen minor. Advisement Prospective baccalaureate students are advised by the Dental Health Program Director. The number to contact is: 1-801-626- 6130. Individual counseling appointments can be made for direct assistance. Admission Requirements Refer to the admission requirements under the A.S. program. There are not additional requirements for the B.S. program. Core and General Education Refer to pages 32-36 of this catalog for Bachelor of Science requirements. Any General Education requirements not taken as part of the A.S. program must be completed in order to graduate with a B.S. degree. Course Requirements for B.S. Degree To be taken in addition to the three-year curriculum for the A.S. degree. Additional Dental Hygiene Courses Required (total of 8 credit hours) A total of eight additional Densci credit hours are required. Three of these hours must come from Densci 483 - Directed Readings. This course is the baccalaureate thesis course. Five additional hours can be selected from the upper division dental hygiene offerings that were not taken as part of the A.S. degree. Head and Neck Anatomy (3) A Identification of major anatomical landmarks of head and neck, their innervation, blood supply and function. Includes two (2) hours of lecture and a three-hour lab each week. 206. Clinical Dental Hygiene I (2) A Clinical application of principles of DenSci 207. Must accompany DenSci 207. Dental Hygiene I (3) A Theory essential to performing clinical prophylaxes, including but not limited to armamentarium, patient-operator positioning, aseptic technique, soft tissue exam, patient history, principles of instrumentation and control therapy. Must accompany DenSci 206. 208. Radiology I (2) A Preparatory skills for clinical radiology. Includes lecture material on x-ray safety and exposure techniques. Must accompany DenSci 210. 210. Application to current research efforts in dental hygiene. Prerequisite: Math 105 or equivalent. 235. Dental Medicine I (5) S Common medical problems of dental patients and their treatment. 250. Professional Ethics (1) Professional Ethics is designed to provide dental hygiene students with a foundation in the professional standards governing the dental hygiene profession and the development of ethical decisionmaking skills. These standards and skills will be reinforced throughout the dental hygiene curriculum. 283. Directed Readings, Projects and Research (1-3) Limited to dental hygiene majors. A maximum of nine hours may be accumulated with this course. 292. Community Dental Health I (2) A Principles of dental public health, including epidemiology, sociological concepts of health and illness health behavior, public attitudes and principles of dental health education.
