Planning Individual and Family Finances (3) Understanding the significance of values, goals, attitudes, and planning in the utilization of financial resources as they relate to increasing satisfaction and promotion of good relationships among individuals within the family. 240. Family Relations (4) Examines dynamics of the healthy family using family theory, individual life span development, research, and active learning experiences. 250. Development of the Child: Birth Through Eight (4) Focuses on developmental characteristics, developmental processes, and events and circumstances that influence the development of a child from birth through eight years of age. Prerequisite: ChFam 150. 253. Learning with Your Child I, II, III (2) Designed to help parents become skilled teachers of their own children by extending child development knowledge and through sharing experiences with their child. Prerequisite: Consent of faculty supervisor prior to registration. 255. Growth of the Infant (3) An exploration of the total development of the child during the first 18 months of life. Special emphasis is placed in the research findings that stress the importance of appropriate experiences for the infant and specific behaviors between parent and child that enhance more complete development. Prerequisite: ChFam SS150. 256. Toddler and Preschool Child (4) Understanding total development of the child, 13 months to 5 years. Students learn observational, teaching and professional parenting skills. Prerequisite: ChFam SSI50 or consent of instructor. 257. The Child from Six to Twelve (3) Growth and development of the child from six to twelve years. Guidance principles of parenting and teaching throughout the child's daily life settings. Prerequisite: ChFam SS150. 260. Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3) An overview of the historical roots of early childhood education; theoretical approaches, types, and efficacy of early childhood programs; political issues and ethical conduct within the early childhood profession. Prerequisite: ChFam 150 or equivalent. 262. Creative Learning Experiences for Early Childhood (3) Development of attitudes, methods, materials and skills for teaching young children. Two hours lecture and three hours lab per week. Prerequisites: ChFam 250 and ChFam 260. 283. Directed Readings (1-5) (when needed) Individually chosen readings on specialized topics supervised by a faculty member. Prerequisite: consent of faculty supervisor prior to registration. 285. Child Development Associate Training (3) Understanding Child Development concepts and applying them to teaching situations with young children. The Professional Resource File in preparation for National Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) is compiled during the course. 286. Practicum (2-9) (when needed) Work experience which applies prior academic learning in a supervised setting. Prerequisite: consent of faculty supervisor prior to registration. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in the Child and Family Studies Department who meet the minimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on-the-job experience. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. 290. Career Development (3) A comprehensive approach toward career development, planning and selection. 292. Seminar in Child Development (1) Discussion and analysis of readings and selected topics in growth and development of the child. 299B. Seminar in Family Studies (4) Discussion and analysis of special topics for Family Studies majors including professional skills and ethics required in the profession. 315. Consumer Rights and Responsibilities (3) The role and responsibilities of the family and its members as consumers. An exploration of marketplace fact and fraud and identification of consumer resources. 320. Applications of Microcomputers in Education (3) Provides students with methods of incorporating microcomputers into the field of Education. 335. Diversities Within Families (3) A critical analysis of the diversity of family forms and experiences within families; including historical, cultural, structural, economic, gender, and individual diversities. Prerequisite: ChFam 140, ChFam 150, ChFam 240, ChFam 299B. 345. Adult Development (4) Growth and development through young, middle, and late adulthood. Prerequisite: ChFam 140, ChFam 150, ChFam 240, ChFam 299B. 350. Young Children at Risk (3) Focuses on the elements of a child's history, status, biological traits, and social circumstances that have the potential of placing the child in a position of risk in early childhood settings during the early childhood period. Prerequisite: ChFam 150 or equivalent. Lab experience to be arranged. 355. Parenting Education (4) This course focuses on the dynamics of contemporary parenting. Theoretical and applied approaches to the understanding and facilitation of the parenting function will be covered. Course content will include information on parenting as a content area as well as methodologies for educating and facilitating parents in their parenting role. Prerequisite: ChFam 335, ChFam 345, or consent of instructor. 360. Guidance Based on Developmental Theory (3) The development of a philosophy and a plan of action for guiding the child based on theories of development. Lectures combine with laboratory experiences to provide opportunity for building relationships with young children. Lab experience to be arranged. Prerequisite: ChFam 250 and ChFam 260, or consent of instructor. 362. Developmental Planning for Young Children (4) Planning of developmental educational experiences to support total growth. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisite: ChFam 262 and ChFam 360. 364. Working with Parents (3) Prepares students to be advocates and practitioners of parent involvement by exploring philosophies, processes, and methods for working with parents and involving them in their child's learning process. Components of family structure, economics, cultural diversity, second-language learners, communication skills, community resources, and a model for parent involvement are integrated into the student experience. 365. Family Processes (4) An examination of family internal dynamics and family systems for the purpose of enrichment and problem prevention and education. Prerequisite: ChFam 240, ChFam 335, ChFam 345, ChFam 355. 368. Teaching Experience in the Preschool (4) The course will provide students an opportunity to be an assistant teacher, to observe and interact with children on an individual and group basis, plan, develop, and implement activities for children. Prerequisites: ChFam SS150, ChFam 256 or permission of instructor. 380. Current Research in Child and Family Studies (4) An introduction to research and exploration of methodology used in the study of family processes. The student will develop skills in reading, evaluating and synthesizing material from professional journals and other sources dealing with family theory. Prerequisites: ChFam 299B, ChFam 335, ChFam 345, ChFam 355. 440. The Family in Stress (4) Examining causes of stress in the family, and developing strategies for coping with stress. 450. Comparative Study of Childhood and Adolescent Development (3) A comprehensive and in-depth analysis of principles and theories of growth as applied to the physiological, intellectual, social, and emotional development of the child and the adolescent. Recommended as a senior class for department majors and minors. Prerequisite: ChFam SSI50. 451. Contemporary Issues in Planning for Children (3) An in-depth study of a contemporary issue in childhood. 452. Classroom and Behavior Management (3) Current issues, practices, and application of a variety of approaches for behavior change, discipline and management of the classroom environment. 453. Learning with Your Child I, II, III (2) A continuation of ChFam 253. Department chair approval required prior to registration. 460. Family Studies Field Experiences (1-12) (when needed) Six to eight weeks internship, which may require off-campus residence. Credit and hours as arranged with instructor. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. 465. Family Life Education Methods (4) Preparing students to be Family Life Educators by exploring philosophies, methods, and skills for teaching and working with parents and family members. Prerequisite: ChFam 365, ChFam 380, ChFam 440. 471. Student Teaching Seminar (3) Analysis of student teaching experiences and synthesis of child development concepts resulting in a personal teaching philosophy. Taken concurrently with ChFam 472. Prerequisite: ChFam 362. 472. Student Teaching in the Children's School (6) Experience in application of generalizations regarding growth, guidance, and development of children in the Children's School. For juniors and seniors.
