Intermediate Ballet (1 each) A, W, S Technique course designed to increase skill in classical ballet. Prerequisite: Dance 147a, b, and c (3 credit hours minimum), or Dance 247a, b or c (1 credit hour minimum), or by audition. 248a, b, c. Jazz Dance, Intermediate (1 each) S Refinement of beginning skills, emphasis on development of technical abilities and performance qualities. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Choreography I: Space Si Time/ Design in Dance (3) W (Offered alternate years) Study of the elements of time and space as they are artistically significant in themselves and in organized forms of meaning in dance. Considering time and space design in related fields of music and art included as relevant to choreographic design and communication in dance. Prerequisite: Dance 241 271. Professional Activities (2) 5 Teaching of American square, contra, and round and international folk and social dance. Includes study of sociocultural, historical, geographic, and musical influences in the development of dance forms. Also for physical education majors and minors. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in the Dance Area who meet the minimum cooperative work experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on-the-job experience. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. May be repeated to a maximum of 9 credits. 291. Dance Preparation (1) A, W, S Preparation and rehearsal of dance composition to be presented in concert. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. Community Service (3) Students will receive an overview of community service and explore opportunities for service learning in the community. Five preparatory workshops (first week only) followed by 55 hours of approved community service. 332. Techniques and Materials for Teaching Modern Dance (2) (Offered alternate years) Methods, teaching techniques, accompaniment, and practical experience in teaching modern dance. Also for physical education majors and minors. Prerequisites: Dance 249. 340. Dance Production (2) A practical application of principles which serve the presentation of dance. The course deals with choreographic problems including staging, lighting, costumes and movement. Prerequisites: consent of instructor. 344. Dance for Musical Theatre (2) Dance skills and techniques taken from the repertoire of the modern musical theatre. Special emphasis on characterization and style as demonstrated by the works of the leading choreographers of this genre. Prerequisites: Dance 148 and 149. 347a, b, c. Ballet, Advanced (1 each) Coordinating course designed to increase skill in classical ballet technique. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: Dance 247a, b, and c (3 credit hours minimum), or Dance 347a, b, or c (1 credit hour minimum), or by audition. 349a, b, c. Advanced Modern Dance (1 each) S Exercises and activities to develop strength, flexibility, endurance, and technical dance skill. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: Dance 249a, b, and c (3 credit hours minimum), or Dance 349a, b, or c (1 credit hour minimum), or by audition. 351. Choreography II: Process (3) 5 (Offered alternate years) Study of and experience in various approaches to the choreographic process as related to artistic concepts and to the philosophy of art as espoused by various traditional and contemporary dance artists and as developed by the individual student. Prerequisite: Dance 251 or permission of instructor. 352. Choreography Practicum (1-3) Supervised experience choreographing a dance for public performance. Arranged through cooperative effort of student and supervisor. Prerequisite: DANCE 351 and approval of instructor. 364. Teaching Creative Movement in the Elementary School (3) A, S Techniques for teaching creative movement and basic dance forms. Suggested for Elementary Education majors. 386. Field Experience (2) A, W, S, Su A course designed to provide opportunities for students to gain practical experience in the field by assisting in the activities of community agencies, schools, and Weber State. Prerequisite: Dance 332 or 364. 391. Touring Company: Rehearsal Sr Development (2) The Touring Company is designed to give students the opportunity to learn about the various aspects of creating, rehearsing, and implementing performances off-campus and to reach the community with our dance program. The commitment is for both winter (rehearsal: 391) and spring (performance: 392) quarters. This segment deals with preparation and rehearsal. 392. Touring Company: Performance (2) The Touring Company is designed to give students the opportunity to learn about the various aspects of creating, rehearsing, and implementing performances off-campus and to reach the community with our dance program. The commitment is for both winter (rehearsal: 391) and spring (performance: 392) quarters. This segment deals with implementation and performance. Prerequisite: Dance 391. 480. Independent Study (1-5) Individual work or work in small groups by arrangements in special topics not included in the announced course offerings. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in Dance who meet the minimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on-the-job experience. MUSIC AREA The music area of the Department of Performing Arts is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Programs leading to the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees are offered for students seeking a liberal arts emphasis. Teaching majors in choral or instrumental music or combinations of the two are offered by the Department. The primary goals of the music area are: 1) to develop aesthetically aware and musically discriminating citizens; 2) to provide opportunities for all students to participate in creative musical experiences and to encourage the involvement of community members in music; 3) to develop musical competence and sensitivity; 4) to provide for career development in music through the preparation of teachers, performing musicians, and scholars; and 5) to expose students and the community to a broad spectrum of music and to continue to provide the finest possible musical performances. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES The following policies are subject to change. For current information, see the latest Department of Performing Arts student handbook and make an appointment with a music area advisor. General Policies and Performance Requirements A. All music majors and minors at Weber State must study privately each quarter with a Weber State faculty member or an approved adjunct faculty member. B. All music majors pursuing the liberal arts emphasis will study privately in their major area for a minimum of 12 quarters. All music majors pursuing the liberal arts emphasis will enroll in one of the major performing ensembles (concert choir, symphonic band, symphony orchestra, guitar ensemble, keyboard ensemble~as appropriate to the student's major area) for a minimum of 12 credit hours. Majors pursuing a vocal liberal arts emphasis may elect to perform in one of the small vocal ensembles for three of the 12 required credits. C. Music education majors (instrumental or choral) will study privately in their major area for a minimum of 11 quarters. Music education majors will enroll in one of the three major performing ensembles (concert choir, symphonic band, symphony orchestra, guitar ensemble, keyboard ensemble-as appropriate to the student's major area) for a minimum of 11 credit hours; music education majors are exempted from participation during the quarter of student teaching. Choral majors may elect to perform in one of the small vocal ensembles for three of the eleven required credits. D. Composite music education majors (instrumental/choral or choral/instrumental) will study privately in their major area for a minimum of 12 quarters. They will study in the minor area until advancement to the 300 level of proficiency is achieved. Instrumental/choral majors will enroll in symphonic band, symphony orchestra or guitar ensemble for a minimum of 12 credit hours; they will also enroll in concert choir for a minimum of six (6) credit hours. Choral/instrumental composite majors will enroll in concert choir for a minimum of 12 credit hours or in concert choir for a minimum of 9 credit hours and in small vocal ensembles for a minimum of 3 credit hours; they will also enroll in symphonic band or symphony orchestra for a minimum of six (6) credit hours. E. All music majors are expected to complete the four levels of competency in their major area of study prior to graduation. F. All music minors will study privately until advancement to the 300 level of proficiency is achieved, with a minimum of six quarters of study. G. A $120 applied music fee is charged to students who register for instrumental or vocal lessons. The fee must be paid at the time of registration each quarter. The student will receive eight private lessons per quarter. All music majors who qualify for upper-division status and who fulfill the requirements of the music area will be exempted from the applied music fee. H. Transfer students must fulfill performance participation requirements as deemed necessary by the area head and faculty jury. Schedule for Performance Evaluations A. Performance evaluations will be regularly conducted and scheduled: 1. At the end of Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. 2. By special request for evaluation during the year upon agreement of the student, the teacher and the committee. All special requests must be scheduled through the area head. B. All music majors and minors must take quarterly performance evaluations. 1. Majors will continue until the senior recital is completed. 2. Minors will continue until junior recital is completed. Procedures for Performance Evaluation A. All incoming music majors and minors and all transfer students and current students who change their major or minor to music subsequent to their initial enrollment at Weber State University will enroll at the 100 level of private instruction. B. A student may be placed in a higher competency level at the completion of any evaluation. C. A student will not be permitted to progress to the 300 level until the piano proficiency examination is passed.
