Show Humanities English Students are advised of the availability of CLEP examinations in composition. With a sufficient score on the general composition examination, a student can receive credit for English 101; with a sufficient score on the subject examination (composition), a student can receive credit for English 101, 102, and 103. No waiver of requirements is given for the CLEP examination. Students desiring advanced composition instruction in place of English 101, 102, and 103 are requested to consult the chairman of the English Department or the director of composition. English MajorThe English major must complete 45-60 hours of satisfactory work in English language and literature with a minimum of 30 hours in upper division. The Department of English offers two kinds of majors: a departmental major and, for prospective secondary teachers, a teaching major. A teaching major is available in a regular form and in an English-Theatre Arts composite form and an English-Communication composite form. Students taking the departmental major or the regular teaching major are required to take the bachelor of arts degree. These students are urged to fulfill their foreign language requirement as lower division students. They are advised that the second year foreign language requirements may help fulfill humanities general education requirements. Students taking the English-Theatre Arts composite teaching major or the English-Communication teaching major may elect either the bachelor of arts or the bachelor of science degree. Transfer students upon whom the bachelor of arts requirement works an unusual hardship should consult the chairman of the English Department. English Departmental MajorThe following courses are required of an English major: English 368 or 369, 371, 381 or 383, 499; and one of the following three courses: English 321, 325, 328; two of the following four courses: 451, 452, 453, 454; three of the following six courses: 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. The following courses are strongly recommended by the Department: English 236, 367, 374, 382, 475; History 450 or 451. English Teaching MajorAn English teaching major must complete all requirements for an English departmental major and must also take English 223 or 324 before taking student teaching. The Department strongly recommends English 329. English and Theatre Arts Composite Teaching MajorThe English Department, in conjunction with Theatre Arts, offers a composite teaching degree with a minimum major in both English and Theatre, in lieu of the usual major-minor combination. The student may declare his primary major in either department, but must complete a total of 80 hours, with a minimum of 45 hours in the primary major, and a minimum of 35 hours in the secondary major. With either emphasis, he may choose a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science program. If the student declares English as his primary major, he must complete at least 45 hours of approved work in English language and literature. The following English courses are required: English 236, 321, either 381 or 383, and 499; one of the following: 452, 453, 454; one of the following: 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466; either 368 or 369 plus at least one of the following: 341, 342, 343; and, prior to student teaching, 324 and 329. The following courses are recommended: 367, 370, 371, 372, 373, 374, 382, 475. If the student declares Theatre Arts as his primary major, he must complete at least 35 hours of approved work in English language and literature for his secondary major. The following English courses are required: English 236, 321, either 381 or 383 and 499: one of the following: 452, 453, 454; one of the following: 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466; one of the following: 341, 342, 343, 368, or 369; and, prior to student teaching, 324 and 329. The student should consult the Theatre Arts Area for the remaining requirements in the composite major program. It is also recommended that where feasible the student take foreign language courses offering reading in the drama; French 313, 431; German 202, 313, 440, 442, 460; Spanish 203, 416, 417. 122 Humanities English English and Communication Composite Teaching MajorIn lieu of the usual major-minor requirement, the Department of English in consultation with the Department of Communication offers a composite major wth a minimum emphasis in either English or Communication. With either emphasis students may choose a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science program. Students interested in this teaching degree may complete their requirements by taking 45 credit hours in their primary area of interest and 35 credit hours in their supporting area of interest. A student electing English as either his major or supporting area must complete the following core of requirements, totaling 23 hours: Grammar: English 324; Linguistics or Language: English 381 or 383; Composition: one of English 321, 325, 326, 327, or 328; Critical analysis: English 236; American literature: one of English 451, 452, 453, 454; English literature: one of English 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, or 466; Eminent writers: English 371; Senior seminar: English 499. The student electing English as his supporting field must take additional hours in English, totaling 35. The student electing English as his major field must take additional hours, totaling 45. The student should consult the Department of Communication for the remaining requirements in this composite teaching major. English Honors MajorA student desiring to receive the English Honors major should (1) maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 or above, or should acquire approval from the department chairman; (2) be enrolled in the General Honors Program and complete at least 15 hours of General Honors courses; (3) fulfill the requirement of the English Department major of 45 hours; (4) take at least 15 of these credit hours in courses for English Honors credit, which must include the Senior Seminar, English 499. The department strongly recommends that the three English greats, Chaucer, Milton, and/or Shakespeare, be seriously considered by the Honors candidate. A student may receive English Honors credit for any upper division English course, including Directed Readings, English 483, for a maximum of 5 hours. The student desiring English Honors credit should seek permission from the chairman of the English Department at the time of registration and should consult at the beginning of the course with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for English Honors credit. English Departmental MinorAn English departmental minor must complete at least 20 hours of approved work in English. The following courses are required of an English departmental minor: English 236, preferably during the freshman or sophomore years; one of the three courses: English 321, 325, 328; one of the following four courses: English 451, 452, 453, 454; one of the following six courses: English 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. The following courses are recommended: English 367, 368 or 369, 371, 374, 382, 383, 475. English Teaching MinorAn English teaching minor must complete at least 28 hours of approved work in English. He must take all courses required for an English departmental minor and must take English 324 before taking student teaching. Courses acceptable for English CreditThe following courses only are acceptable as English credit toward graduation for majors and minors: English 223, 225, 235, 236, 321, 324, 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 330, 331, 341, 342, 343, 350, 355, 358, 360, 367, 368, 369, 370, 371, 372, 373, 374, 381, 382, 383, 388, 451, 452, 453, 454, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 475, 483. 492, 499. Lower division courses 251, 252, 253 are not recommended for English majors and minors because they duplicate required courses 451, 452, 453, 454. Lower division courses 261, 262 are not recommended for English majors and minors because they duplicate required upper division courses 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. Asian Studies Minor ProgramThe Department of English participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. A student who wishes to participate in the program should indicate his desire to do so with the Asian Studies representative, Dr. Candadai Seshachari, who will help the student work out a proper combination of courses to fit his particular needs. Scholarship"D" grade English credit may not be applied towards graduation requirements for English majors and English minors. 123 |
