The Theatre Arts Area establishes as its objectives the following: (1) To encourage understanding and appreciation of theatre; (2) To prepare teachers, artists, and scholars: (3) To expose students and community to great theories and philosophies, and to challenge conventional thinking; (4) To encourage creativity through participation in such areas of theatre as acting, directing, management, design, and playwriting; (5) To elicit the interest of young people in theatre; (6) to encourage community participation in theatre. BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Theatre Arts Area requires all departmental majors to take the bachelor of arts degree. Prospective teachers may select either the bachelor of arts or the bachelor of science degree. In addition, majors must complete between 45 and 60 hours of satisfactory work in Theatre Arts. No "D" grade in Theatre Arts courses will be approved toward graduation with a major or minor in Theatre Arts. During the senior year and prior to graduation, every major student will prepare a comprehensive showing of his or her talents in all areas of theatre. All students will be encouraged to develop audition repertoires and/or design portfolios. They will also be encouraged to seek summer employment in stock or repertory theatres. Several types of majors are offered: A departmental major in Theatre Arts and several options for prospective secondary education teachers. Departmental majors may follow one of three different programs: (1) Pre-professional emphasis in performance (acting and directing), (2) Pre-professional emphasis in production (technical and design), or (3) General Theatre program. All majors are expected to participate in each main season production by accepting at least one of the various assignments, such as acting, technical crew, 138 Humanities Theatre Arts costume crew, makeup, box office, house management, stage management, assistant director, or promotion. Also, it is expected that prior to graduation! each major will have performed duties in each of the various areas. These requirements are designed to ensure the breadth of experience commensurate with an undergraduate theatre education. Theatre Arts Departmental Major Performance Emphasis During the freshman, sophomore, and junior years, students seeking to emphasize performance will prepare an audition for critique by the theatre faculty. Departmental majors emphasizing performance must complete the following courses. Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 201, 212, 213, 225, 241, 312, 313, 315, 401, 412, 415, 499, plus 5 hours of theatre electives. Production EmphasisDuring the freshman, sophomore, and junior years, each student seeking to emphasize production will be expected to perform technical duties according to his or her particular skill level. Departmental majors emphasizing production must complete the following courses: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 225, 241, 243, 245, 341, 343, 351, 354, 355, 401, 499, plus 8 hours of theatre electives. General Theatre MajorDepartmental majors emphasizing general theatre must complete the following courses: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 201, 212, 213, 225, 241, 343, 351, 401, 411, 412, 415, 499, plus 5 hours of theatre arts electives. Theatre Arts Departmental MinorStudents minoring in Theatre Arts must complete the following courses: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 225, 241 or 343, 411, plus theatre electives to total 30 hours. Minors must participate in at least two Weber State Theatre productions before graduation is approved. Theatre Arts Honors MajorA student desiring to complete the Theatre Arts Departmental Honors Program should (1) maintain an overall GPA of 3.3; (2) be enrolled in the General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses; (3) fulfill the usual requirements of one of the Theatre Arls majorsTheatre Arts Departmental Major, Theatre Arts Teaching Major, Theatre Arts and English Teaching Major, and Communication and Theatre Arts Teaching Major; (4) complete at least 20 credit hours among these requirements in courses taken for Theatre Arts Honors credit; (5) complete a Theatre Arts Honors Senior Project. A student may receive Theatre Arts Honors credit in any of the following courses; 315, 343, 351, 401, 411, 412, 415, 483, 486, 493, 499. The student desiring Theatre Arts Honors credit should seek permission from the Chairman of the Department of Music and Theatre Arts at the time of registration, and at the beginning of the course should make a written agreement with the appropriate professors regarding the work expected for Theatre Arts credit. Teaching Majors and Minors Theatre Arts Teaching MajorStudents taking the teaching major in Theatre Arts must complete the following courses in Theatre Arts: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 201, 212, 213, 225, 241, 343, 351, 401, 411, 412, 415, 471, and 499. Theatre Arts and English Teaching Major with Theatre Emphasis (No minor is required with this major)Students taking the composite teaching major in Theatre Arts and English with a Theatre Arts Emphasis must complete the following courses: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 225, 241, 315, 343, 411, 412, 420, 471, 499 and a choice of either Theatre Arts 401 or a combination of 415 and two hours of Theatre Arts electives.
