Show Humanities Music BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Music Area grants bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees. Candidates for these degrees must have completed a minimum of 183 credits. A minimum of 60 credits of upper division work is required for graduation. The Music Area has been accredited by and is an Associate Member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Area exists to serve four primary functions: 1. To provide students who wish to major in music with a thorough professional training so they will be prepared to enter the teaching profession as music educators, or to become professional performing musicians, or to go into some aspect of the music industry. 2. To provide students who are not music majors with musical experiences, in both academic and performing areas. Some of these students will take a prescribed course of studies and will receive a minor in music. 3. To provide prospective elementary school teachers with a background in music which will prepare them to teach music in the elementary school. 4. To serve Weber State College in a public relations capacity by providing musical programs for civic groups and for schools throughout the area. The general area requirements are: PianoBasic and practical piano skill is required of all music majors. PerformanceMusic majors are required to participate in a major performing ensemble. Each ensemble course may be repeated for a maximum of six credit hours. Concert and RecitalsMusic majors are expected to attend all departmental recitals and concerts and a specified number of community and symphony concerts. Senior RecitalA solo recital to be presented during the senior year is required of all music majors. Music FeesA fee of $36.00 will be charged to students taking private lessons for credit. This fee must be paid at the time of registration each quarter; the student will receive nine private lessons. Jury ExaminationAll music majors are required to perform in two jury examinations each year. These examinations will be held at the end of fall and spring quarters. Following are the specific departmental requirements. However, requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. Composite Teaching Major in Music Education with Instrumental-Choral EmphasisThis program is recommended for the prospective secondary school music educator who wishes to teach both instrumental and choral music. No academic minor is required. The requirements are Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212, 379 and 380; Music History and Literature: Music 301, 308, 309, 310; Music Education: Music 216, 250, 251, 252, 319, 320, 321, 322, 420, 425, 426; Applied Music: Private Study (6 hours) and Major Ensemble (6 hours). Total 80 hours. Composite Teaching Major in Music Education with Instrumental ConcentrationThis program is recommended for the prospective secondary school music educator who wishes to specialize in teaching instrumental music. No academic minor is required. The requirements are Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212, 379, 380; Music History and Literature: Music 301, 309, 310; Music Education: Music 205, 216, 250, 251, 252, 319, 322, 420, 426, 427, 428; Applied Music: Private Study (6 hours) and Major Ensemble (8 hours including 2 hours chorus). Total 77 hours. Composite Teaching Major in Music Education with Choral Concentration This program is recommended for the prospective secondary school music edu- 134 Humanities Music cator who wishes to specialize in teaching choral music. No academic minor is required. The requirements are Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212, 379, 380; Music History and Literature: Music 301, 308, 310; Music Education-Music 216, 250, 270, 319, 320, 321, 339, 420, 422, 425; Applied Music: Private Study (6 hours) and Major Ensemble (8 hours including 2 hours opera theatre). Total 76 hours. Departmental Major in MusicThis program is designed to fit the needs of students who wish to obtain a baccalaureate degree with a major in music. It is not recommended for the prospective school music educator. An academic minor is required. The requirements are Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212, 379, 380, and either 410, 411 or 412, 413; Music History and Literature: Music 301, 308, 309, 310, 311; Applied Music: Private Study (6 hours) and Major Ensemble (10 hours). Total 60 hours. Departmental Major in Music with Concentration in PianoThis program is designed to fit the needs of students of piano who wish to obtain a baccalaureate degree with a major in music. It is not recommended for the prospective school music educator. An academic minor is required. The requirements are Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212, 379, 380, and either 410, 411 or 412, 413; Music History and Literature: Music 301, 308, 309, 310, 311, 312; Applied Music: Private Study (6 hours), Major Ensemble (4 hours) and Accompanying (4 hours). Total 60 hours. Departmental Minor in MusicThe following requirements are recommended but may be modified to meet individual needs: Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112; Music History and Literature: Music 301; Music Education: Either Music 320 or 420; Applied Music: Private Study (3 hours) and Major Ensemble (3 hours). Total 27 hours. Music Honors MajorA student desiring to complete the Music Departmental Honors Program should (1) maintain an overall GPA of 3.3; (2) be enrolled in the General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses; (3) fulfill the usual requirements of one of the music majors: Composite Teaching Major in Music Education wi(h Instrumental-Choral Emphasis, Composite Teaching Major in Music Education with Choral Concentration, Departmental Major in Music, Composite Teaching Major in Music Education with Instrumental Concentration, and Departmental Major in Music with Concentration in Piano; (4) complete at least 20 credit hours among these requirements in courses taken for Music Honors credit, (5) complete a Music Honors Senior Project. A student may receive Music Honors credit in any upper division music course with the exception of the following: Music 340, 341, 343, 344, 345, 347, 348, 350, 353, 354, 355, and 360. The Senior Project will be taken for credit under Music 499, Seminar; and is required in addition to the Senior Recital required of all students. The student desiring Music Honors credit should seek permission from the Chairman of the Department of Music and Theatre Arts at the time of registration, and at the beginning of the course should make a written agreement with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Music Honors credit. Elementary Music Education ConcentrationA student in Elementary Education can pursue either a 20-hour or a 40-hour concentration in elementary music education. Before pursuing one of these concentrations, however, the student should consult his adviser in Elementary Education for approval. The requirements for a 40-hour concentration are Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112; Music History and Literature: Music 301, 310; Music Education: Music 216, 320, 321; Applied Music: Private Study (6 hours) and Major Ensemble (6 hours). The requirements for a 20-hour concentration are Music Theory: Music 169; Music History and Literature: Music 301; Music Education: Music 216, 320, 321; Applied Music: Major Ensemble (4 hours) and Private Study in piano (3 hours) or Music 213, 214, 215. 135 |
