Show Technology Utah Skills Center North (high school equivalency) test battery; and (4) to provide a general review for students who wish to enter a college program. The General Education Program is primarily designed to give Skills Center students pre-vocational preparation. Classes in reading, vocabulary/spelling, basic mathematics, and language arts provide this" basic education background. In cooperation with Weber Adult High School, the Skills Center High School Completion Program offers credits toward a high school diploma. These classes meet the minimum requirements for high school completion established by the Utah State Board of Education and the Weber County School District. For every 100 hours of class attendance, students receive one credit toward graduation. The GED Program is designed to help students pass the General Education Development test battery. After passing the five sections of the GED (social science, English, mathematics, natural science, and literature), the student is awarded a certificate of educational development by the State Board of Education. This provides an evaluation of educational maturity and competance and is in lieu of a high school diploma. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION BE011. Orientation General information and an introduction to the Basic Education area. BE021. Development of Writing Skills (1-9) Develops skills in the mechanics of writing. Also assists students who have problems in reading. BE022. Basic Reading (1-9) Guides and assists students who have difficulty reading and listening below a 9th grade level. BE023. Basic Reading ESL (1-9) Geared especially for non-English speaking students to help them learn English. BE024. Vocabulary Spelling (1-9) Spelling skills developed through pronunciation exercises and pattern drills. Basic techniques for enlarging and improving the students vocabulary are included. BE025. Language Arts (1-9) Considers basic communications skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, spelling and thinking. BE02fi. Communication ESL (1-9) Conversational English developed through free and controlled discussions on topics of general interest. BE031. English/Business (1-9) Use of memos, letters, reports, etc., in applying the fundamental principles of effective business communication. BE032. English Essentials (1-9) A thorough review of basic language skills with particular stress on grammar, punctuation and spelling. BE033. English GED (1-9) Designed to aid the student to pass the English portion of the GED test. The course covers: spelling, word choice, sentence structure, style and clarity, punctuation, capitalization, grammar and usage. BE034. Literature (1-9) Explores various aspects of literature. Designed for the non-GED student. BE035. Literature GED (1-9) Aids the student to pass the Literature portion of the GED test. BE036. Library Science (1-9) Students learn how a library functions by working with the librarian. Students learn such skills as cataloging, filing, minor book repair, etc. BE037. Developmental Reading (1-9) Emphasis on improving reading speed, comprehension and vocabulary. Reading techniques and study skills appropriate to academic materials are developed. BE041. Basic Mathematics (1-9) A comprehensive reveiw of arithmetic. Topics include the fundamental operations of whole numbers, fractions decimals, and percentages, areas of plane figures, volume, proportion, operations with signed numbers and equations. BE042. Math GED (1-9) Covers arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and modern math. Designed to help the student pass the mathematics portion of the GED examination. BE043. Vocational Math (1-9) General mathematics course applying to various vocational areas. BE051. General Science (1-9) Designed to serve students who need to learn or review basic scientific facts and ideas. BE052. Science GED (1-9) All materials presented are designed to pass the natural science portion of the GED test. BE061. General History (1-9) Student chooses from a variety of materials to help him understand and appreciate history. Heavy emphasis is placed upon American history, but other areas are available. BE062. History GED (1-9) Prepares student for the social sciences portion of the GED examination. The course includes World History, U.S. Constitution and Government; the reading of charts, graphs and maps. BE063. Psychology (1-9) A study of human behavior including personality, emotions, mental health, body language, intelligence, and learning. Student Government (1-9) Designed to teach fundamental processes of government. Class members organize and conduct various student projects and activities. BE071. Arts and Crafts (1-9) Introduces student to various handicrafts and techniques of art. BE072. Music Workshop (1-9) Designed to introduce the student to the world of music. Provides a background from classical to hard rock for the student's enjoyment and appreciation. BE081. Family Life (1-9) Oriented to meet the needs of the adult in the minority and lower economic settings. The course will consider: nutrition, home management, budgeting, consumer education, self concepts, personal relationships, clothing and textiles, hygiene, child development and health. The class will be programmed to instruct students in applying information to their own family situations. BE032. Sewing (1-9) Concentrated instruction and practice in cloth-ing construction. BE091 Physical Education (1-9) Designed to help the student become aware of the needs to be physically fit. Provide exercise through formal drills and games. AREA OF OFFICE OCCUPATION Roietta Goodwin, Supervisor This program is offered to students preparing to enter the field of Office Administration and Business Education. The intent of the course is to prepare the student for entry level employment or entry into regular coursework. Training is provided for the following job titles: General Clerk, Transcribing Machine Operator, Typist, Clerk-Typist, Stenographer, and General Office Clerk. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 00011. Orientation (1-3) General information and an introduction to the Office Occupations Area. A knowledge of the basic requirements for a career in a clerical position. 00012. Human Relations and Personal Development (1-5) Designed to help students develop insight into what is involved in good human relations in the office and to develop the personal qualities necessary for good human relations. 00021. Basic Typewriting Skills (1-9) Development of sustained typing power, control of figures and symbols, improvement of techniques. 00022. Applied Typewriting (1-9) Review of keyboard, business letters, tabulated reports, improvement of basic skills and intensive speed building. 00023. Production Typewriting (1-9) Manuscripts, special drills in letter arrangement, business forms and envelopes. 00024. Office Procedures (1-3) Practical integration in all secretarial skills, training in office techniques, organizations, routine human relations and business etiquette. 00025. Medical Typewriting (1-3) Completing medical reports and records, typing statements of patients' accounts, and typing numerous forms for the insurance companies and other agencies. Using medical terms. 00026. Legal Typewriting (1-3) Completing legal documents. 00027. Financial Typewriting (1-3) Completing loan applications, and arranging information in table form. 00031. Business Machines (1-9) Practical experience using ten-key adding machines, electronic and printing calcultors in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, per-cents, etc. 0032. Recordkeeping (1-9) Employer's personal recordkeeper, payroll, petty cash, cash receipts, cash payments, etc. A general introduction to bookkeeping. 00033. Bookkeeping (1-9) A comprehensive study of bookkeeping theory and practice; recording, reading, and interpreting business data. 00041. Gregg Shorthand I (1-9) A method of writing rapidly by substituting made abbreviations, or symbols for letters, words, or phrases. (2 hour block) 00042. Gregg Shorthand II (1-9) Development of the transcription skill by observing the rules of punctuation, grammar, spelling, erasing, proofreading; by learning to read in thought phrases; and by keeping the typewriter moving at an even rate. (2 hour block) 00043. Hyspeed Shorthand I (1-9) A method of fast writing based on the English alphabet using abbreviations, omission, substitution, and blending of letters. (2 hour block) 00044. Hyspeed Shorthand II (1-9) Development of the transcription skill in taking dictation for speed and for mailable copy. (2 hour block) 00045. Filing (1-9) Basic principles of office organization and filing techniques. Reviews different methods of filing procedures. 00051.
