Show Continuing Education COURSES OF INSTRUCTION PV060. Carpentery I (10 hrs/wk.) Introduction to the building industry. Information concerning hand tools, equipment, building materials and opportunities in the building industry is offered. Building codes are studied. Visual aids are used to correlate the theory and practical aspects of carpentry. PV061. Carpentry II (15 hrs./wk.) Emphasis is placed on measuring, sawing, proper handling of portable power tools and skills that must be developed as they apply to jobs from a practical standpoint. Woodshop machines are studied from both the viewpoint of actual operation, safety usage and what one can expect from a performance standpoint. PV062. Carpentry III (15 hrs./wk.) Training in this course consists of actual methods of construction, such as framing entire walls. Theory of the steel square is given. Emphasis is placed upon application of roof framing and stair building. PV063. Carpentry IV (15 hrs./wk.) This course is designed to acquaint the student with all types of roof construction. Each student will be required to cut" and assemble all types of rafters as well as to prepare a roof for build-up construction. PV064. Carpentry V (15 hrs./wk.) This course is intended to give the individual practical experience in framing doors and windows. An insight into other areas of construction is given, such as exterior woodwork and flooring. The student is also introduced to basic brickwork and electrical and plumbing installation in order to be given a comprehensive picture of the building industry. Pre-Apprenticeship in Plumbing The curriculum is designed for students who want to be entry-level plumbing apprentices. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION PV071. Plumbing I (10 hrs./wk.) This course will initiate students with shop procedures and safety requirements. Emphasis is placed on the operation of a variety of thread cutting equipment, assembly of standard pipe measurement and offsets. PV072 Plumbing II (15 hrs./wk.) Instruction includes pipe shop, pipe theory and oxyacetylene pipe welding. The student learns the use and construction of soil drainage pipe and fitting; and the assembling and installation of pipe offsets. PV073. Plumbing III (15 hrs./wk.) Course includes layout and installation consisting of cutting and threading as well as using transit, hydraulics and pneumatics. Floor Covering At the completion of this training, students will know the basic skills for installation of floors with different types of tiles and installation of carpets. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION PV008O. Tilesetting I (10 hrs./wk.) This course introduces tools used in tilesetting, preparatory work for receiving tiles, strip setting, installation of floors, walls and dashboards, water-proofing and reinforcements. PV0081, Tilesetting II (15 hrs./wk.) Instruction covers installation of floors, glazed mosaic, ceramic, quarry and cement tiles, with open joints and cove corners. PV0082. Tilesetting III (15 hrs./wk) This course includes installation of ceiling jambs, curbs, gutters, columns, stairs, arches, panels, fireplaces; cutting, drilling and polishing of marble. PV0083. Carpet Laying: (15 hrs./wk.) This course introduces common tools and materials used in carpet-laying ; care of tools and materials; planning, cutting and carpet laying. Building Drawing and Materials COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 051. Building, Drawing and Materials (2) Drawing symbols and detailed layouts related to building construction. Prerequisite: Intermediate mechanical drawing. Individual instruction. Two labs a week. 052. Advanced Building, Drawing and Materials (2) Continuation of building, drawing, and materials home planning, floor layouts, elevations, stairs, sections, and plot plans. Individual instruction. Two labs a week. Building Inspection 053. Building Inspector Training A basic course to introduce construction, personal (professions, trade and the rest) to the basic field of the inspection of building and structures, and to expand the skills of persons now employed in the pursuit. 236 Continuing Education Plastics 051* Introduction to Plastics A survey course in plastics which deals with the latest materials, methods, and products of the plastic industry. Information presented in- cludes materials, processing' methods and equipment, properties of plastic testing- methods, product design, technical information sources, safety, costs and project development. ACADEMIC STANDARDS In all cases where degree credit is granted, academic standards of the academic departments are followed. COUNSELING Counseling in the area of vocational choice, educational planning, or any personal concerns is available by appointment. Appointments may be made through the main office of the Counseling Center, Weber State College. FACULTY All members of the instructional staff are selected for their outstanding recent experience in education, business or industry. They are college faculty or persons employed during the day in responsible positions in their fields of specialization, who bring to their classes the benefit of current knowledge and practical experience. FEES, DEPOSITS AND REFUNDS Extension ClassesCredit classes are charged the same fees and given the same refunds as day school. Specialized classes are contracted according to costs incurred in setting up and operating the class. Conferences and Special ProgramsFees for conferences are published on the brochure for the program. Non-Credit ClassesCorresponding fees are listed in the class bulletins, published quarterly by the College. The College policy is to keep Non-Credit course fees as low as possible for high quality instruction. Travel Study ProgramProcedures for making deposits, and paying fees are explained in detail in the brochures announcing the various Travel-Study Programs sponsored by the college. Brochures on Travel Study Programs are available at the Continuing Education Center on campus. CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES The Division of Continuing Education offers a broad spectrum of courses designed (o serve a variety of needs. Not all the courses carry credit leading toward a certificate or degree. Since it is impossible to anticipate in advance all individual, group and community needs, not all courses are listed in the catalog. Those not listed, however, do appear in announcements, brochures or class schedules. The courses listed earlier in the catalog under the departmental sections of the academic schools may be offered in the Continuing Education Program. In addition the courses which follow, listed by departments as indicated, may also be offered. DEPARTMENT OF ART 090.
