Show Humanities Foreign Languages Special ExaminationStudents proficient in a language which is not their native language who have had foreign residence may obtain a maximum of 24 hours of credit by doing one of the following: (1) pass a special examination, if previous credit at this level has not been allowed or (2) have the 24 hours for the bachelor of arts degree waived by earning a "C" grade or better in an upper division language class.* Students with a minimum of three years of high school language may (1) receive from five to fifteen hours of credit by passing this examination or (2) have waived 15 hours of credit toward the bachelor of arts degree by earning a "C" grade or better in a class numbered in the 200's.* Application for the special examination for credit is to be made at the office of the Department of Foreign Languages. Foreign Language Honors Major A student desiring to complete the Foreign Language Departmental Honors Program should (1) maintain an overall GPA of 3.3; (2) be enrolled in the General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses; (3) fulfill the usual requirements of one of the Foreign Language majors French Major, French Teaching Major, German Major, German Teaching Major, Spanish Major, Spanish Teaching Major; (4) complete at least 15 credit hours among these requirements in courses taken for Foreign Language Honors credit; (5) complete a Foreign Language Senior Project. A student may receive Foreign Language Honors credit in any Foreign Language upper division course. The student desiring Foreign Language credit should seek permission from the Departmental Honors representative of the Foreign Language Department at the time of registration, and at the beginning of the course should make a written agreement with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Foreign Language Honors credit. Asian Studies Minor Program The Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Asian Studies minor program. A student who wishes to participate should indicate his desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative who will help the student work out a proper combination of courses to fit his particular needs. ScholarshipA "D" grade in any upper division course will not be accepted in the language major or minor. FRENCH French Major**Students majoring in French are required to take 36 to 40 hours of upper division credit. The following numbered courses are required: 304, 305, 306, 311, 312, 313, and 330. Additional courses may be chosen from the following numbered courses: 302, 309, 401, 420, 421, 431, 441, 451, 471, 483, and 499. French Minor**Students minoring in French are required to take 18 hours of upper division credit which must include the following numbered courses: 304, 305, 306, 311, 312, and 313. French Teaching Major**A French teaching major must complete the program outlined above for French majors and must also take 340 which must be completed prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. A teaching major must student teach in French for a minimum of one quarter. French Teaching Minor**A French teaching minor must complete the program outlined above for French minors, and in addition must take 330 and 340. The latter course must be completed prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. A teaching minor must student teach in French for a minimum of one quarter. Travel Studies courses 209 and 309 do not apply. "Majors and minors are required to take the course numbered 201, 202, 203. 214, 215 and 216 or their equivalent, except those students with foreign residence. 126 Humanities Foreign Languages COURSES OP INSTRUCTION 101, 102, 103. First Year French (5-5-5) Listening and speaking skills receive primary emphasis, although reading and writing are an integral part of the program. Courses are sequential, and the previous course is a prerequisite. Five lectures and two 1-hour labs a week. A W S HU201, HU202, HU203. Second Year French (3-3-3) Grammar and composition of intermediate level and progressively advanced reading from well-known authors. Continued emphasis on listening and speaking skills. It is recommended that French 214, 215, and 216 be taken concurrently with this series. Courses are sequential and should be taken in order. Prerequisite: French 103 or equivalent. A W S 209. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history of France taught in Europe by members of the Weber State College faculty during summer tours arranged by the Foreign Language Department. Su HU214, HU215, HU216. Conversational French (2-2-2) Intensive development of oral expression and active vocabulary through pronunciation drills, controlled discussions on subjects of current interest, and oral practice on assigned topics, vocabulary, idioms, and cultural items. French 201, 202, and 203 should be taken concurrently with the series. Courses are sequential, and it is recommended that they be taken in order. Prerequisite: French 103 or equivalent. AWS HU302. Culture and Civilization (3) History, geography, fine arts, social customs and civilization of France. Prerequisite: Two years of college French or equivalent. A HU304, HU305, HU306. Third Year French (3-3-3) Intensive study of grammar, syntax, stylistics and composition and their appl ication. Courses are sequential, and it is recommended that they be taken in order. Prerequisites: French 203 and 216, or consent of the instructor. AWS 309. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history of France taught in Europe by members of the Weber State College faculty during summer tours arranged by the Foreign Language Department. Su HU311, HU312, HU313. Survey of French Literature (3-3-3) A general view of literary periods, movements, and social background, with representative readings. Prerequisites: French 203 and 216, or the consent of the instructor. (Offered alternate years.) AWS 330. French Phonetics (2) An advanced course in principles of French phonetics, analysis and correction of faulty pronunciation, and techniques of teaching French phonetics for teaching majors and minors. Prerequisites: French 203 and 216, or the consent of the instructor. (Offered alternate years.) W 340. Methods of Teaching a Foreign Language (3) A practical course in up-to-date techniques in teaching foreign languages. Must be taken prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. Recommended for third year. Prerequisites: French 203 and 216, or the consent of the instructor. S 401. Senior Year Language Studies (3) Advanced studies in grammar, composition, translation and linguistics. Prerequisites: French 304, 305 and 306. (Offered alternate years.) A 420.
