DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY Geology 061. Gemology (4) Physical and other properties of the minerals and rocks used as gems in jewelry or decorative pieces. 062. Mineralogy for Prospectors (2) A course designed to acquaint prospectors, miners, hunters, and hikers with common ore minerals and their associated gangue minerals. Emphasis on simple physical and chemical tests for the identification of these minerals and on their mode of occurrence. DEPARTMENT OF OFFICE ADMINISTRATION AND BUSINESS EDUCATION 051. Beginning Personal Typewriting (2) Development of sustained typing power, control of figures and symbols, improvement of techniques. A speed of at least 30 words per minute should be attained. 052.. Beginning Personal Typewriting (continued) (2) Review of keyboard, business letters, tabulated reports, improvements of basic skills, and intensive speed building. A speed of at least 40 words per minute should be attained. 053. Intermediate Personal Typewriting (2) Manuscripts, special problems in letter arrangements and business forms. A speed of at least 60 words per minute should be attained. 061. Machine Shorthand (3) Introduction to Touch Shorthand, keyboard, theory, and speed development with dictation speeds to 60 words per minute or faster. Prerequisite: Office Administration 102 or equivalent, or take concurrently. Continuing Education 062. Machine Shorthand (continued) (3) Continuation of Office Administration 061. Completion of the entire shorthand theory with practice dictation. An entrance speed of at least 40 wpm. Prerequisite: Office Administration 052 and 061 or equivalent. 066. Professional Vocabularies (a) Medical, (b) Legal, (c) Certified Professional Secretary (3) A study of specialized vocabularies used by secretaries in various specialized occupations. 067. Economics and Business Administration for CPS Review (3) Fundamental economic concepts found in the secretary's day-to-day contacts with prices, taxes, labor, social responsibilities of business; government regulations of business, sources of economic data. Business organizations and management; types of ownership; staffing of business; management controls; techniques of office supervision and management. 068. Secretarial Accounting for CPS Review (3) Classification of accounts, interpretation of accounting data and of financial records as related to top-level secretarial work, employer's personal record keeping, payroll, petty cash, income tax reports, budgets and notes. 069. Secretarial Skills and Procedures for CPS (3) This course is one of a series of three courses designed to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare the secretary to take the Certified .Professional Secretary's Examination. 071. Beginning Personal Shorthand (3) Introduction to theory of Gregg Shorthand system with emphasis upon reading and writing fluency. 072. Beginning Personal Shorthand (continued) (3) Use of the entire shorthand theory in practice dictation. A speed of at least 70 words a minute should be attained. 073. Intermediate Personal Shorthand Dictation (3) Stenographic short cuts, abbreviations, phrases and transcription. A shorthand speed of at least 90 words a minute should be attained. 115. Hy-Speed Longhand (ABC Shorthand) (3) A method of fast writing based on the English Alphabet; abbreviations, omission, and blending of letters; dictation and transcription. Prerequisite: Office Administration 052, 102 or equivalent. This class continues into Office Administration 072 or 122. DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY Political Science 051. Municipal Administration (5) This course in mangement training is designed to produce skills for handling managerial problems in accordance with sound principles. 052. Municipal Planning (5) Planning the effective utilization of city resources and facilities, with particular emphasis on transit lines, sewage system, parks and playgrounds, public buildings, zoning and water supply. 053. Municipal Personnel (5) Practical analysis of municipal personnel problems. The course deals with organization, classification, training, promotion, disciplinary and paying city employees. 054. Municipal Finance (5) Practical analysis of the operation and techniques of municipal techniques of municipal finance. The course will study local problems in connection with revenue, budget making, accounting, assessments, purchasing and storage, long-term financing, and other financial controls. 056. Municipal Fire (5) Examination of the important fire safety principles and use of equipment for effective operation will be studied. 057. Municipal Public Works (5) Practical analysis of procedures and techniques for the efficient management of municipal public works. Particular attention is given to streets, sewage, waterworks and airport operation. 058. Municipal Recreation (5) Practical analysis of the planning and operation of community recreation. The history of local problems will be noted. Planning for city wide participation is emphasized. 059. Municipal Public Relations (3-5) Practical analysis of the public relations process. Involves study of communications between city and community, use of news media, and intra-organizational communication. 060. Practical Politics A practical course designed for the layman to aid him in understanding the political processes. Philosophy 114. Introduction to Religion (5) Major problems of religion in the Western world, such as conceptions of God, ways of knowing God, religious values, possibility of immortality, human freedom. 118. Types of Religious Philosophy (5) Intellectual foundations of some major contemporary movements in religious philosophy, such as Protestant Modernism, Scientific Humanism and Existentialism. 120. Introduction to the Bible (5) Background of the Bible. In addition to selected readings, special consideration is given to the dating of the books of the Bible, authorship, canonization of the books, and preservation and transmission of the English Bible, including Protestant and Catholic versions. 121. Introduction to the Old Testament (3) Major books of the Old Testament, considered in their historical context. The Pentateuch and writings of the great prophets are the major focusing points. 122. Introduction to the Apocrypha (3) This course continues the history of the Jewish tradition of Old Testament times ending in about 200 B.C. down into New Testament time ending about 150 A.D. This is a history of intertestamental times and the writings that played an important role in early church history. 241 |
