Show Arts, Letters and Science — Art Students taking a Departmental Art Major or a Commercial Art Major are not required to take a minor, since teaching is not the objective. Courses of Instruction 1. Introduction to Ceramics—Beginning course in ceramics. Emphasis on techniques of wheel throwing with an introduction to hand building forms with fireclay. Appreciation of ceramic design. Shop care and procedures. A W S (3) Deru 2. Ceramic Design—Continuation of Art 1 with emphasis on throwing skills and designs suited to ceramic form. Introduction to clay decorations and glazing techniques. Kiln stacking and firing. A W S (3) Deru 4. Handbuilding Techniques—Beginning course in the making of ceramic forms using handbuilding techniques such as coil, slab, pinching, etc. Large projects will be encouraged. Introduction to decoration with strips and textiles. Shop care, kiln stacking and firing. A W S (3) Deru f5. Introduction to Art—Survey course for the general student. A W S (3) Staff 6. Introduction to Art—Survey course for the art major. A (5) Adelmann 11. Pen Lettering—Letter structure and alphabet drill with speedball type pens, and the use of markers. A W S (3) Staff 13. Showcard Lettering—Elements of free-hand brush lettering. A W S (3) Staff 14. Showcard Design—Poster and showcard design, arrangement of copy and use of variety of alphabets. Prerequisite: Art 13 or equivalent. A S W (3) Staff 16. Lettering and Typography—Technique of lettering for indication and reproduction in magazine and newspaper advertising. A (3) Staff 17. Advertising Layout—Methods of layout indication. W (3) Bryner 18. Advertising Production—Commercial methods of visualization, plate-making and typography in advertising layout and production printing. A (3) Staff 19. Advertising Layout—Type, figure, product indication for comprehensive layout design. S (3) Bryner 100 Arts, Letters and Science — Art f20. Basic Drawing—Study of basic structure, light and shade. For all students who wish to draw but are not interested in art as a major field. A W S (3) Staff 21. Drawing—Basic drawing for the art major with a variety of media—emphasis on line, value, and design. A W (3) Staff 22. Drawing—Further exploration of drawing using line, form, and value. Prerequisite: Art 24. W (3) Bryner 26. Head Drawing—Analysis of head structure, and drawing from life. Prerequisite: Art 21. S (3) Groberg, Collett 29. Perspective—Parallel, oblique, and cylindrical perspective adapted to needs of art and architecture students. A (3) Groberg 30. Basic Design—Accepted principles and theories of design. A W S (3) Staff 31. Basic Design—Organization of plastic elements in three- dimensional design. A W S (3) McBeth 32. Design and Color—Theory and use of color, especially as applied to design. Rendering Design—Contemporary techniques of rendering, using various drawing and painting media. Prerequisites: Art 21, 29. W (3) VanWagoner 47. Rendering Design—Architectural rendering, using various watercolor media. Development of the finished rendering for illustrative purposes. Prerequisite: Art 46. S (3) VanWagoner 51. Printmaking Design—A study of the basic printing methods and techniques, including relief, intaglio, and piano- graphic printing. A W S (3) Strong 60.
