Show Education — Secondary Education Education — Secondary Education The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 42 and 20 quarter hours respectively. These major and minor requirements are described in the catalog under the departments offering them. The teaching major and minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement—see below). MAJORS AND MINORS ■ Business Education Art English French German Spanish Biology Botany—if taken with Zoology Geography Zoology—if taken with Botany Mathematics Chemistry Physics Physical Education History Political Science * Psychology Sociology Music MINOR ONLY "Instructional Media (non-print materials) Instructional Media (Library Science) Economics Health Education Speech Theatre Arts In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may have a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-two hours of subjects in closely related fields. The composite major does not require an accompanying minor. The following are composite majors with their requirements: BIOLOGY COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR The Biology Composite Teaching Major must complete a minimum of 62 quarter hours in the life sciences in addition to the requirements in the physical sciences, state certification and graduation requirements. 266 The required courses have been selected to give the student a broad background in the biological disciplines as well as minimal training in the physical sciences. The courses required for the Biology Composite Teaching Major are: Botany 1, 2, 161 or 162; Microbiology 1; Zoology 4, 7, 20, 130, 181; Botany 145 or Zoology 140 or 145; Botany 120 or Zoology 120 or 123; 2 credits of seminar selected from the Botany, Microbiology or Zoology Departments; Chemistry 11, 12, 13 or 24, 25, 26; Geology 21 or 22; Physics 5; and Mathematics 14 or 18. Substitutions of equivalent credits or deviations from the above requirements must be approved by the advisor. Recommended electives may be selected from the following: Botany 50, 100, 110, 185; Zoology 164, 168, 172, 180. It is strongly recommended that the students take more advanced courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, especially if they plan on graduate studies beyond the Bachelor of Science Degree. BUSINESS EDUCATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR See description in the Business Education Section of the catalog. MUSIC EDUCATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR The Music Education Composite Teaching Major is recommended for prospective secondary school music educators and consists of a minimum of 80 quarter hours in four areas as listed below. Requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. Music Theory: Music 10, 11, 12, 81, 82, 83, 179, 180; and either Music 182, 183 or Music 185, 186. 29 hours Music History and Literature: Music 107, 108, 109 or Music 110, 111, 112. 9 hours Music Education: Music 24, 25-A, 25-B, 26-A, 26-B, 27-A, 27-B, 28, 120, 121, 122, 130, 135, 136. 36 hours Applied Music: 10 hours of major ensemble, 6 hours private lessons Total 16 hours 80 hours MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR The Mathematics and Physical Science Composite Teaching Major requires courses in three of the four departments: Chemistry, Geology-Geography, Mathematics, and Physics. At least 27 hours of specific courses must be taken in one department and at least 20 hours in each of the other two departments selected. 267 |
