Show Arts, Letters and Science — Music BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Department of Music grants Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Candidates for these degrees must have completed a minimum of 183 credits. A minimum of 60 credits of upper division work is required for graduation. General Departmental Requirements Piano—Basic and practical piano skill is required of all music majors. Performance—Music majors are required to participate in a major performing ensemble. Each ensemble course may be repeated for a maximum of six hours credit. Concerts and Recitals—Music majors are expected to attend all departmental recitals and concerts and a specified number of community and symphony concerts. Senior Recital—A solo recital to be presented during the senior year is required of all music majors. Music Fees—A fee of $36.00 will be charged to students taking private lessons for credit. This fee must be paid at the time of registration each quarter; the student will receive nine private lessons. Jury Examinations—All music majors are required to perform in two jury examinations each year. These examinations will be held in February and in May. Specific Departmental Requirements Composite Teaching Major in Music Education—This program is recommended for prospective secondary school music educators. Requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. No academic minor is required. Music Theory: Music 10, 11, 12, 81, 82, 83, 179, 180; and either Music 182, 183, or Music 185, 186. 29 hours Music History and Literature: Music 107, 108, 109 or Music 110, 111, 112. 9 hours Music Education: Music 24, 25-A, 25-B, 26-A, 26-B, 27-A, 27-B, 28, 120, 121, 122, 130, 135, 136. 26 hours Applied Music: 10 hours of major ensemble 6 hours of private lessons 16 hours Total 80 hours Departmental Major in Music—To fulfill the requirements for baccalaureate degrees with a major in music, a candidate must have completed satisfactorily the requirements listed below. This 174 i Arts, Letters and Science — Music program is not designed for the prospective school music educator. Requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. An academic minor is required. Music Theory: Music 10, 11, 12, 81, 82, 83, 179, 180; and either Music 182, 183 or Music 185, 186. 29 hours Music History and Literature: Select from the following, Music 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, and 112. 15 hours Applied Music: 10 hours of major ensemble 6 hours of private lessons 16 hours Total 60 hours Departmental Minor in Music—The following requirements are recommended but may be modified to meet individual needs: Music Theory: Music 10, 11, 12. 12 hours Music History and Literature: Music 107, 108 or Music 110, 111. 6 hours Music Education: Music 120 or 130. 3 hours Applied Music: 3 hours of major ensemble 3 hours of private lessons 6 hours Total 27 hours Elementary Music Education Concentration—A student in Elementary Education can pursue either a 20-hour or a 40-hour concentration in elementary music education. Before pursuing one of these concentrations, however, the student should consult his advisor in Elementary Education for approval.
