Show Arts, Letters and Science — Mathematics Arts, Letters and Science — Mathematics BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Students who wish to select a major or minor in mathematics must first file an application with the Chairman of the Mathematics Department. Department Major—The following courses are required for the departmental major: Bachelor of Arts Degree Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53, 54, 161, 162, 163 and at least 21 credit hours of approved mathematics courses numbered above 107 other than Math 161, 162 and 163. These courses must be completed with a "C" grade or better. At least 12 credit hours of mathematics courses numbered above 101 must be earned at Weber State College. Physics 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66. German 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or the equivalent in another approved modern language. Bachelor of Science Degree The same as for the Bachelor of Arts degree, except that students desiring a Bachelor of Science degree may select approved electives in the place of the modern language. It is recommended that majors planning graduate work obtain at least a reading knowledge of French or German or other approved modern languages. Departmental Minors_Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53 and in addition at least 8 credit hours to be chosen from mathematics courses numbered above 101. At least one four-credit hour course numbered above 101 must be completed at Weber State College. Teaching Major—A minimum of 33 credit hours of Education courses: Education 111, 101, 105, 161, 146, 157, 112, 102, and Psychology 1 and Speech 1 are required. At least 9 credit hours of approved courses in each of the two general education groups (Humanities and Life Science) and 12 credit hours of approved Social Science courses are required. Courses submitted to satisfy the Physical Science area requirement must include 10 credit hours from Physics 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 and/or Chemistry 24, 25. (See Physical Science area requirements.) Required mathematics courses are: Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53, 101, 152, 153, and in addition at least 16 credit hours of courses selected from Mathematics 127, 128, 131, 132, 135, 157, 161, 162, 163, 181, 182. Other courses numbered above 101 maybe substituted on approval of the Mathematics Department. At least 8 credit hours of mathematics courses numbered above 101 must be earned at Weber State College. Teaching Minor—Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53 and 152 or 131 and 153 or 157. Mathematics 101 is a recommended elective for teaching minors. At least one four-credit hour course numbered above 101 must be completed at Weber State College. Composite Teaching Major in Physical Sciences—See Mathematics and Physical Science, Composite Teaching Major, School of Education. Note: A grade point average of 2.0 is required of all majors and minors in all mathematics courses. Courses of Instruction 001. First Course in Algebra—Essentials of mathematics to qualify students for Mathematics 14. A W S (5). Staff 007. College Arithmetic—Fundamental concepts of arithmetic. AWS(3) " Staff 11. Mathematics for Elementary Teachers—Fundamental properties and operations related to whole numbers and fractions. Combines lectures with laboratory periods. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the mathematics section of the admissions examination for teacher education or a passing grade in Math 007. A W S (4). Staff 12. Mathematics for Elementary Teachers—A continuation of Mathematics 11 with emphasis on decimals, negative numbers, algebra and geometry. Prerequisite: Math 11. A W S (4). Staff 14. Intermediate Algebra—The fundamental laws and algebraic operations. Prerequisite: Mathematics 001 or satisfactory performance on the placement test. A W S (5). Staff 18. Trigonometry—Trigonometric functions and their properties. Prerequisite: Mathematics 14 or satisfactory performance on a placement test in Intermediate Algebra and Plane Geometry. A W S (5). " Staff 21. College Algebra—Ratio and proportion, binomial theorem, progressions, mathematical induction, inequalities, complex numbers, theory of equations, logarithms, determinants, and selected topics. Prerequisite: Mathematics 18 or satisfactory performance on placement tests in Intermediate Algebra and Trigonometry. A W S (5). Staff 51.
