Farm Welding—Setting up apparatus, proper flame for welding, manipulation of rod and torch for simple welding jobs; welding with the arc in manipulation of the electrodes. Two lab oratories. Four lectures and one laboratory. S (5). Staff WELDING The Welding curriculum is designed for the student who wishes to major in welding. The various aspects of electric, oxyacetylene and inert processes are included. General service courses are offered for those in related areas who wish to become familiar with the basic principles of welding as it applies to their respective fields. NOTE Sophomore year will not be offered 1970-71. Courses of Instruction 1. Oxyacetylene Processes—Skill in welding, cutting, hard facing, surface-bonding, testing, and inspection of sheet and plate steel welding as applied to the American welding standards. Principles of Gas Welding—Oxacetylene processes, including fusion of mild steels, surface bonding of the non-ferrous alloys, cutting techniques, and the safety factors with respect to gas welding. Five lectures. A (5). Shelton 3. Electric Welding Processes—Structural joint designs, hard surfacing, testing, and inspection of arc welding. Five laboratories. W (5). Shelton 4. Principles of Arc Welding—Electric arc welding processes; fusion of steels, hard-facing of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, fundamentals of electrode design, and safety factors involved in the arc welding process. Five lectures. W (5). Shelton 5. Inert Welding Processes—Inert gas welding of non-ferrous metals such as stainless steels and aluminum alloys, emphasizing testing and inspection requirements of the American Welding Standards. Five laboratories. S (5). Shelton 6. Principles of Inert Welding—Non-ferrous alloys and their weldability; construction and maintenance of the inert welding machine. Five lectures. S (5). Shelton 15. Welding Blueprint Reading—Interpretation and application of blueprint reading; estimation and cost of materials and structural design as it applied to welding in industry. For majors. One lecture and one laboratory. S (2). Shelton 51. Gas Fusion Processes—Non-ferrous alloys and the newer developments in weld metals and their fluxes. Testing and inspection as required by American welding standards. Prerequisite: Welding 1 and 2. Five laboratories. A (5). Shelton 52. Principles of Gas Fusion—Current developments in the oxyacetylene welding process; research and experimental work involved in a new industrial technique. Five lectures. A (5). Shelton 53. Advanced Arc Welding Processes—Principles and applications of advanced arc welding; weldability of ferrous and the non- ferrous metals, design, and cost estimating; inspection and testing. Field trips to Utah's leading industrial areas. Prerequisite: Welding 3-4. Five laboratories. W (5). Shelton 55. Testing and Inspection—Industrial tests and inspection required to meet industrial standards. Prerequisite: Metallurgy 90. Two lectures and three laboratories. S (5). Shelton 60. Electric Arc Welding Processes—A basic course of principles and practices in electric arc welding. Latest advancements, research studies of industry of alloy welding is included.
