Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 21, 1887 to 91, canvased, Start of Egg Buisnes, Rozana died, Home mission Wife sophie to Millcreek Salt Lake be. I canvased for Books & Pictures besidse work. my home on Farm, in 1888 I workedhome and engaged in buying Eggs, & Butter. In 1889 I enlarged in the Eggs Buisness. buying from most of the stores in Northrne Sanpete and formed a partnership with Daniel Jensen of Mill Creek. He to dispose of Products While I bought & shiped, finding him to run run behind bothe in disposing of produce & also in paying for what was sold, I went to Salt Lake and took charge in person We however settled up everything amicly In 1890 My Brother Andrew joined me in Buisness. but never put much stock in, & in 1894 I bought him out as he gave his attention to mining. On Aug 17-1891 my little Girl Rozana died 11 months & 11 days old, she was exceptinal sweet, to good for this world. In 1890 I located in Salt Lake City renting now from a Brother Jens Kundsen in Washington Ave. in the for part of 1891 I went home to Moroni and in March was sent on a home Mission to a Settlement called Millburn, where I visited every family in & out of the church, & done well, 22, 1891 to 93, Temple, Children attend University, moved to Salt Lake, bought Property On return home, I and my Sister Katrine with her husband went to Manti Temple where we worked for reletives, soon after my return & learning of business not doing well under my Brothers care. I returned to Salt Lake & again took charge of service. In the fall of the year I rented House from Andrew Jensen in the 17th ward, and My Sons James, Alfred, & Daughter Mary lived with me & went to theUniversity. In the spring of 1892 I was arrested on a charge of unlawfuly living with my Wife but was released on failure of proof. After School my children went home and I borded with my Brother Andrew In the Spring of 1893 I moved my 1st family to Salt Lake City, and rented my farm to one Soren Nielsen, both I and the family was tired of living separate and I could to not stay in Moroni and make the nesasary means to Keep the children at School. We lived in the 22nd ward from May 1893 to Nov 1895 where I bought a 5 x 20 lot with house in the 15th ward, which I latter dvided in 3 making 2 lots of front & sold to my son Lorenzo & one L. N. Rasmusen. |
