Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Rasmusen, att. preisthood meeting assisted in Ordaing 3. was Mouth in Ordaining Herman Hoffman to Preist. 8 In a.m. worked with Pump & Sewer, in p.m. wrote to Wife. & some buisness, at ev. visited on “Casernen” Nielsen Family 9th Sunday, Att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings. at ev. visited Br. Jens Olsen, & family, Conf. and Helga Christensen 10th Red. last goodbye from Pres. Grant. Red late American Mail was twice in City to arrange for a new Pump. or repair for the old at ev. In Comp. with F. Christensen, Lund, Madsen & Elder Petersen Visited a Architect Hansen who once lived in Salt Lake. his Wife beeing in the church. Spent a pleasant evning 11th Current buisness. wrote Joseph Kjar, read coretur, Att. Mutual. prepared for Trip to Aalborg on Meeting house act. 12th At 9. am took train for Aalborg. was met at Stat, in Veile by Bro. Christian & Daugther Marie. & Sister Camille & her husband, arrived in Aalborg at 9 p.m. was met by Pres. Nielsen & Elder Francis Jensen 13th Used day in Auditing all acts to dat & examining bills, conected with the Building 150, Paid to erecting churches in Skandinavia, Paid Contractors Dec 14th Paid a bill to H.S. Lange for Stoves & other Hardware. got 10% off, or over 70 Kn. rebate in p.m. had a meeting of Committe. I had taken 10,000.00 Kn. of church money with me by permission of Pres. Grant, & over 500.00 Kn. donation 200.00 of which was my own making 300.00 in all. (I had in former years given $100.00 to Copenhagen House & a Similar Sum To the Stockholm.) We found that we were able to pay all present obligations, and those of the near future. with abt 400.00 Kn. to spare, but it would require abt 2000.00 yet to finish & furnish all complete. took Supper at a Br. Nielsens. 15th Paid of Vany for Bricks, Sorensen for Lumber & Carpenter work. & Therkildsen for Mason & Plastering. all setlements were made without a jar. all expresed themselves pleased, and all had treated us with confidence & respect, & done good work, & we got rebates or donations of abt. 230.00 or abt. 300.00 to date. at ev. Pres. Nielsen & I went to see a Br. Christian Petersen & Wife & engaged Them to live in The House when we moved & to be Janitors for building, on the following terms |
