Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Christians at ev. 22nd Called at Sister Camillas took Diner & in p.m. went to my Bro. Son Christen in Hover, at ev. att. meeting in Veile got Telegram that Sister Berg was dead mad answer, & at 12:50 a mon 23rd took train for Copenhagen, arrived at 8 o clok. was Sleepy, & Tired. had directed Telegrams to Pres. Grant & Rasmusen, at noon recd. instructions from Pres. Grant. telegraphed contents & Wrote to President Rasmusen to Send Body Howe & all instructions needed 24th Att. to buisness, wrote letter & read Papers Deseret News reported defeat of American Party, took bath, spent ev. at Br. Morks 25th Att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings 26th “ Buisness, reading & writing, at 6 p.m. with Pres. Lund visited the Fyn Family at 8 att. a cottage meeting at L. Petersens in Veilegade, abt 25 present & fine spirrit. 27th Buisness at Bank. in p.m. planted trees. at ev. att. mutual. 28th att. To current buisness. recd. Am. Mail wrote to Chris & Mary Christensen at ev att meeting 29th Recd. & wrote Letter to Christiania in regard 148, Choir Social Nov 29 to the forwarding of Body of Sister Berg also wrote President Grant, in relation to tracts & missionary expences. at ev. visited Sister Dahlgreen & family being The aniversary of her birth or babtism & also 3 Sons. 30th att. to some buisnes & Study. at ev. att Relieve society meeting. December 1st Buisness, reading, & wrote to Lorenzo and Anie Christensen my children. 2nd Sunday. att. S. School and 2 & 6 p.m. meetings & spoke in Latter. 3rd Att. to Current buisness & at ev att. Branch meeting & spoke. good feelings & spirrit. 4th Att. to Current buisness, wrote H.C. Hemsen Mink Creek. at 4 p.m. with others visited a frind Nielsen on Kasamen & remained in ev. 5th Att. to current buisness & Meeting at ev. 6th Att. to some buisness, writing to Pres. Rasmusen Kristiania Nielsen Aalborg abt. House went in town to look out for some Chandeliers. bought & sent home a few Items to Wife & Children, at ev. a Thanksgiving goose was enjoyed by all the Elders Missionaries and after one hours Choir practice the choir was turned in to a Social & a pleasant time spent to 10:30 all seemed pleased |
