Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 127, 1906, Visit Relatives, Select Hardware, go to Odense, Ret to Coph., arrival of missionarys, In the Forest Br. Lund, Sister Camilla Sister in law Frederikke & I went to Kirkeby to Visit Sister Gretha, was well recd. Brainlow being in charge of Veile Watterwork he showed us trough it. 11th I selected stoves for the Aalborg Building at Mr. C.M. Hess. Factory where my Br. is manager, & in the p.m. went to Hover, again, was well received, had made a good impression 12th Sunday, took leave of Relatives & at 8:35 took Train for Odense, arriv. at 1 p.m. att. meeting at 2 & 8 p.m Visited a frind Mr. Jantzen, Stayed at Hotel Pastgaarden. 13th in am. found a lost investigator, Ane Christensen, at 3:50 took Train for Copenhagen, arr. at 8:15 all well. 14th Was bery bussey at Office 15th likewise, Notice recd. Of no Emigration until further advised, answered Letters & Tellegrams, & att meeting at my Ct. 6 Elders & one Sister Missionary Arrived 16th In. a.m. met with & instructed the new arrivals of missionaries. In p.m. went with a frind Nielsen & a party to Scotsborg & Wibeck Sailed house. 128, A Sick Elder, N. Smith arrive Aug. 17th Made apointments of Missionaries. and other buisness had my att. in ev. Att. R. Society meeting. 18th My son Harrys birthday being 9 years Buisness in A.m. 4 left for Norway. one Br. Hansen came from Trondhjem sick. in p.m. visited Saints & Sick, vit Fabricious, Martin Nielsen & Mork, wrote home 19th Sunday. att. S. School & 2 & 6 pm meetings. spoke in evning. latter visited a Christensen family poor but good 20th our Recd. Several Letters among Them one from a Young missionary James Frandsen, in which he lays his soul & toughts open, expresses his gratitude to me & love also. won by my Kindness to him he is but 19 years p.m. recd. & answered several Letters, among them one from Sister Johanna Jensen in Ammon Idaho, asking Council. one from Buisness reporting all well. at ev. att a meeting in a Soldiers Home 21st Went in town to hunt up some last trunks. located & forwarded same in p.m. wrote Letters, at ev. att. Mutual 22nd in Morning Elder Willard Smith arrived having tried for nearly 2 weeks, To get him he left for Paris at 12:10. A. Brother Gall |
