Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 108, 1907 Sept. 17th having 2 Daugthers in the Church. & both beeing of the upper or better Clash of People, in the p.m. went to Holmen collen, & at ev. att. a Relief Society Conf. 18th Made a visit in the Aug Family and in the p.m. with others went to Bygdo and at ev. att. a social, att. by abt 4 or 500 people, a fine program rendered, and all seemed to feel pleased, and did not retire until after 12 o clok. 19th Called on the Kjalland Family, a very Knid & frindly lot. his Father & Onkels 3 in number had been Preist in the Lutherian church, in the p.m. Visited around Toran, & in the ev. att regular meeting & spoke 20 minutes for the last time in Kr. Ania 20th Visited some in the a.m. & with others assisted Sister Tollefsen & child, took leaf of the Elders, & at 3:15 took Train for Trondhjem where we arrived in the morning of the 21st a great snowstorm had prevailed during latter part of night, Snow on the ground, Grain was in the field both cut & uncut nor ripe we were met at Stat. by President Bentsan & went to Vesselgade 7, Elders quarters, in the p.m. interviewed The Elders. at. ev. att 1st Conf. meeting, Elders gave Their report. 109 Sept 22. Sunday. att S. School Conf. in a.m. & Meetings in Trades Univrs Hall at 4 & 8 p.m. I spoke in the Latter, a good spirrit prevailed, but not many strangers present. it was very Stormy, rained all day. Saints turned out well however and all seemed pleased. 23 Att. Preisthood meeting from 10 to 1:30 then on invitation Took dinner with a ‘Frue’ Jensen whose daugther had been in America, was treated fine & Sister Vidsoe was invited to call again. latter assisted Pres. Benson in assigning the Elders. at 8:30 att a meeting for the Saints, where the Sacrement was administered the Authorites & Elders Sustained in thier several places. 24 Associated with the Elders took Dinner at Bro. Oiens, called at a Frind Olsen, & at ev att. a Relief Society Conf. after which a Social was held til 12 o clok. I wrote several cards during the day. was very misarable from cold. 25th Visited among strangers, & saints, and at ev. took Steamer Astrea for Bergen Bros Madsen N. Jensen & Hemmingsen beeing with. 26 All day on Sea, but Weather beeing calm it was gentle pleasant none of us were sick 27th arrived in Bergen at 4 a.m. went to Office Kang Oscarsgade 5. associated with Elders |
