Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Supper at Thorwald Petersens. 20th Att. to current buisness & wrote Letters to J. Plowman. L. Christensens & Daugther Elleanor. also to a Missionair in Chicago. Boume. at ev. visited a sick Br. Martin Nielsen & with Elder Christensen, Folkersen & his Father anointed him, he has Turberker. 21st Att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings 22nd att. to current buisness, wrote to Pres. Wm Asper of Temple Cirkle, read some, and at 4 p.m. with Elders Madsen & F. Christensen visited a Family Carl Christensen, not in the church we were very Kindly received, 23rd current buisness. Study & revising Manuscript of Elders in Struction book. at ev. mutual 24th Att. To current buisness, wrote to Br. Andersen & Sister C.D. Nielsen, Manti, had a long talk with a young man that had got our tracts. name Mathiasen. at ev. att. meeting & spoke 25th Att. to some buisness assisted in making book of instructions, at ev. visited several families, 26th Was very buissy with acts. & sending out letters. recid a Letter from 1st Presidency instructing Mission Presidents to have full charge of every missionary in his district. 142, Letter from 1st Presidency gave full power to Mis Pres over all missionaries And should any ever prove unworthy & There was evidence of unbecoming conduct. To at once call in Elders conviniently got together sit as a council & Try the case in quistion & if excommunication result. Turn the Elder over to his own recerses, & have him surender his Missionary certificate, If however it would be deemed proper, might assist him with means to return home, but take his note Notify the President of the European Mission & send his note in for Collections. att. Preisthood meeting at night. 27th My oldest Son James Birthday 38 years ago, wrote Letter to my son John, att. to other buisness, and at 5:30 with most of the Elders & a few other frinds visited Br. Jens Olsen it beeing his birthday we spent a very pleasant eving. 28th Sunday att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings, and latter on invitation visiteted a Mr. Vemrigt where we met a lot of our Saints. had Chocklate, music & Songs. 29th Was very buissey in Office decided to release Pres. Breinholt of Aalborg Conf. & Appoint Elder Chas. C. Nielsen to take his place. at ev. went to Visit frind Nielsen at ‘Kasernece’ |
