Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 104, 1907 Aug. 27th Sent out circular Letters, advising of Emig. in Oct. giving price. 345 Kr. pr. Full ticket, & ½ & ¼ acordingly 3rd class over to Liverpool & 2nd from there on. wrote P.S. Christiansen on ? of Literature att. Mutual at ev. good House & program 28th Recd. OK. from 1st Presidency on tract act. Also information that my sucsesor had not been tought off. or selected & for me to proceed, much other buisness came in for the days work. at ev. I attended regular meeting. many strangers present. some of them bent on mischief, had Letter from Children Lorenzo & Anie & answered both 29th Recd ‘corection’ on Tract & Star, at ev. Choir 30th Office work. in A.M. in p.m. done some shoping buying Some to send home at ev. att a Releif meeting, the last for Sister Otto, as president, a fair attendance & much emotion was manifested, 31st Att. to some Office work. & at ev. visited a N.J. Hansen Family in Comp. with others thier daugther Sina abt. to emigrate. Sept. 1st Sunday. att. S. School. & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings, Spoke in latter, latter, with Sister Franks (housekeeper 60 years) visited a Bro. Mork Family 105 Sept. 2 In am. Office work. Dinner at a Bro. Christensen, in p.m. with sister Otte done som shoping, at ev. att. Branch meeting, & spoke. a goodly member present, & good spirrit. 3rd Att. to Office work in fornoon. with others dined with a Family Nielsen at ev att. to Mutual, many strangers present. 4th In a.m. buisness, Dined with Sister Jorgensen, att. a general meeting at ev. House was packed with Saints & Strangers 5th Time given to Work & Study. In Tivoli at ev. 6th Worked in Office in A.m.& went to Harbor in p.m. & Priesthood meeting at night 7th Work in Office, Study &, in the ev. Br. Madsen, N. C. Christensen & myself were in Tivoli by invitation of Sister Fyhn, spent a pleasant eving. Several Missionaries arrived. 8th Att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings. at ev. had a little social in honer of Sister Otte that was now abt. to leave, to wich the Zion Elders were invited. 9th Instructed & apointed Elders, also other work had attention, in the evening Sister Otte. Missionar, Sister Valentine a Visiting Sister. Alma Christensen, Jensine Hansen and Agda Jensen Emigrants, left for Zion |
