Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 59, 1905, Aug., Peace Japan & Rusia, Rebellion of Saints 25th At home writing, reading & working at House repairing, at ev. att. Relieve Society meeting. 26th at Office & House repairing 27th Sunday att. S. School & 2 meetings 28th helped to clear out superhall & started on repairing. at ev. With President Plowman visited a Br. Andersen & anointed his Wife 29th Woked on Hall. at ev. visited @ Br. Hansen This day Papers report Peace between Japan and Rusia, in which all the World rejoice. 30th Att. Office work. & in p.m. worked at repairing hall. at night got Letter from Pr. Grant. 31st Att. to some Emigration & other matter & worked on Hall, had telegram to send home sick Elders Sept 1 Continued Labor. Recd. Recd. & answered several letters Attended Preisthood meeting was in Council with President Henriksen & Plowman, recd. Tellegram @ 10pm. to send home another sick Elder N.C. Christensen 2nd worked in Office. & in Hall 3rd Sunday Fastday, att. Sunday School & 2 meetings all in the little Hall. the large, not being done 4th Attended to Officework. recd. Letters from Presidents C.D. Fjeldsted & A.H. Lund. at Ev. attended Branch meeting, here a scene ocurred I have never before vwitnesed, a Sister from Norway brought her recomend, & abt. 1/3.00 of the congregation voted against recovering her, gave no cause, yet it was 60 Sept. 4 Rumer that she was working on a Factory where there was a Strike. and here the Saints wanted to prevent her from joyning the waard & would not own her as a Sister because she was willing to work. President Henriksen rebucked the Saints, followed by Elder Jull. Jorgensen, Madsen, F. Christensen & myself, showing that we had no right to Keep a member out. that was recommended, from another ward, but to accept her, then if there was any cause against her, proceed in the regular way bring a charge, & try her. there was a feeling of rebellion among many of the Saints, after meeting. Some of the Saints especialy a Br. Olsen, offered her assistance if she would quite work pending the Strike, deeming it best in her own interest & also to help to bring abt. unity among the Saints. She accepted the proposition. We Elders held that we had no right to withhold membership only for breach of Church laws, or breach of church disipline. 5th Saw off some emigrants, & Elder Jorgensen & Jacobsen, att. some Buisness & Visiting The Saints, in conection with Pres.
