Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 81, 1905, Onkel S. Miller Dec 19th 40 years since we met. he was glad to see me, & gave me information abt relatives. at ev. Pres. Hansen went with to Br. S.P. Christiansens here we met several others. also Teachers came, & after listining to Them gave some instructions 20th Att to some buisness , & in Co. with Pres. Hansen took train for Odense, I continued to Copenhagen where I was just preceded by 4 new Elders. was well recd by Saints, & found all well in generel 21st Att. To Buisness. Apointed new Elders, & wrote home. 22nd Rotine work. wrote several Letters, at ev att meeting 23rd Rotine & office work. 24th Sunday att S. School. & Meeting at 2 p.m. Pres. E.L. Henriksen from Bergen Conf. having arrived dell. one Joseph Smith 100 anniversary oration, was invited out to a Br. Hews Larsen for Supper. 25th Chrismas day. meeting at 2 p.m. Elder Frederik Christiansen & I spoke, quite a few Strangers present. was invited out for Supper to Lars Petersens 26th Att. some buisness & sociated with S. School Social 27th Released Sistirs Widtsoe & Gorden from Kiania to go to Trandhjem Conf. & other business. at 8 p.m. attended meeting. 28th Rotine work. att a babtism confirmed a Br. Edvard Jensen. at ev. Att. a consert in Hall 29th current work. went with other Brethren to Rosenborg Slot, wrote Letters. att. priesthood meeting 82, review Dec. 30th Recd. & wrote Letters, att to Office work. at ev. Elder Gev. Jorgensen ret. from Kristiania. helped F. Christensen with Star &. 31 Sunday, att. Sunday school, Confirmed a Sister Marie P. Olsen just babtized att. Meeting at 2 p.m. many Elders present. most of them spoke at Eve. was with Frederik Christensen at the home of a Mr. Petersen not in the church. Spent it very pleasantly, & I think profitable. At the present day on reveiw over last year I feel I have cause to be thankfull to God, for his blessings, both Temporal & Spiritual Our nesasities has been amply suplied. no deaths in the Family, but one adition by birth vit a girl Baby Vera & healt generaly in my imidiate family. In a spiritual way, I feel that I was highly honered to be called to preside over the Skandinavian Mission. my pleasent assotiation for over 3 months with Pres. C.D. Fjeldsted. and as far as I can learn, I have to this day given general Satisfaction, & have the love, confidence & respect of both Elders & Saints, I also have the Satisfaction to Know that all the conferences are in the control of & under guidance of good men and finiancialy are in good condition |
