Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 111, 1906, Aalborg house, Elder Larsen sick, Sent home May 14 Instructed & apointed Missionaries wrote several Postals & att. general work 15th Rotine work & rest & Study, at ev. mutual 16th Recd. many Letters, also plans of Aalborg house, inspected same & answered Letter in regard thereto, aproved some, but not all. at ev. att. meeting & spoke. 17 Rotine work. Visited Fabricious Family & Martin Nielsen a Sick man, at ev. choir practice 18th Some emigrated. several visitors left att. to office work. at 8 p.m. att. Coucncil meeting, one Sister Eriksen att. beeing in transgresion of 6th commandment., expresed regret. & asked forgivness, it was done 19 Rotine work, wrote Lorenzo. 20th Att. S. School. & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings & spoke in the eving, latter called on a Br. Hansen Family 21st In a.m. rotine work. also Telegraphed to Pres. Grant, abt a sick Bro. W.L. Larsen from Newton Utah, & took Steps for his return, in p.m. visited a Family Larsen, & one Christensen, Father not in the Church, but Wife & 5 children 22nd Elder Larsen left for house sick Recd Letters from Br. Bertel Wis. & MME Pettersen Utah. Answered both. att to some Emigration matter & Mutual at ev. 112, Trip in Contry Sprained ankle 23rd current buisness, at ev. att, meeting. 13 missionaries arrived, all for Skandinavia 24th Being a holiday vit the assention of the Lord Christ. a tour was planed out in North Sheland, via “Lying by” trough “Fursoe” Lake, to Holte & return, it was very pleasant. over 50 participated, including all the Elders, we played & sang. I got my left Ankel sprained. Tumbling over. I run 7 races that day beat 6 the 7th was a tie. all got home ere 11 o clok tired & satisfied, the Lake & Landscape was beautifull, 25th Interviewed all the Elders one at a time had a meeting & gave instructions and latter made appointments, at ev. att. Releif Society meetings. 26th Adviced & associated with the new Elders wrote several Letters, in The ev. attended a Birthday party at Bro. Jens Olsens. his Wife being 46 years old. 27th Sunday, att. S. School & 2& 6 p.m. meetings & Spoke in the Latter. 28th Rotine work. 4 Elders left, nothing special 29th Recd. Letter calling me to Aalborg. Pd. The Printer Borching 1000 Kr. on act at ev. Att. mutual. |
