Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 121, 1906, Aalborg Concert & Priest h. meeting, Aarhus the same, Copenhagen, Preisthood meeting. Grant left. July 12th at 10 a.m. took boat for Frederikshavn Denmark, arr. 3 p.m. went. to L.D.S. Hall, no Elders found, but Sister Petersen put up Strawberries for us, & at 4:35 took Train for Aalborg arr. 7— Concert at 8:30 good House much apreciated, after Concert. ev Preisthood meeting comenced. & Pres. Grant Spoke abt 1 hour to the Elders. 13th At 8:50 A.M. took Train for Aarhus. arrv. at 12. was met By Pres. Petersen & other Elders. at 3 p.m. took dinner at a frind Mr. Hermansens, after which he invited us to visit his show of living Picktures. at 8 ev. Concert. fairly good house. Stoped at Central Hotel 14th at 9 a.m. Preisthood meeting. Pres. Grant. used abt 2 hours, instructing the Elders, at 12:10 took boat for Kopanhagen over Kalundborg arr. 7:15 Went to Mission headquarters Kirsgadell 15th Att. S. School, & 2 & 6 p.m. Meetings Pres. Grant spoke in All. I translated at night. good attendance. 16 At 9:30 had Preisthood meeting, & as usual spoke & instructed the Elders. att to much buisness, at 8 ev. bid Pres. Grant goodbye him taking Train for Berlin 122, Concert, Sumary of Instructions and impresion, Bugy ride artist leave 16, Att. concert latter. good house & good program. all pleased. The following points were. the main Burden of Pres. Grants instructions. vit. Keep the Word of Wisdom, do not drink Pilsner Beer. – aproch people in humility & love, Pres. Woodruff said, get the Spirrit of the Lord & Keep it. avoid Women & Wine as the gates of hell. go no place where you would not take your Sister, have an aim and work to it. do not run in debt. nor speculate on borrowed money, live among the people, & eat with them even should it not be palatable Economise with Money, Work always. never be idle, & Keep up the work when you return 17th Att. to some buisness. & in the Afternoon, a Brother Olsen took me & Bros Clawson & Andeline also Sister Clark out to Klampenberg. & beyond. here we were met by others that had gone by train ahead. at 8:10 Bro. Clawson & Sister Clark left for berlin 18th I was very buissy, Elders get in. at ev. Sister Ingeborg Olsen arr. as a Missionary from Brigham City. 8 pm att. meeting. 19th Rotine buisness and much extra 20th Diricted & wrote several Letters at ev. att. Relief meeting |
