Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Concert, Teather Feb 3 impressive & showed great sympaty for the Family. the man died had just turned 27 but was a criple had been for years & the last 19 months had been on his Sick bed literaly eaten up of Tuberkers. Fast meeting at 2 & ordinary at 6 p.m. Funeral conducted by me. the Conf Pres. not beeing home, after meeting visited the Mirk Family. 4th Att. To current work. got Letter from Lorenzo Stating he had paid for me $355.00 Tithing for me, at ev. att, Branch meeting 5th Buissy with examing Vouchers. preparing for Printing of new tract. at ev attended a concert in Hall. goten up by Releif Society to raise means for the poor. 6th Recd Letter from Elder H. Jensen that all Carpenter work on the Aalborg House will be finished this week. wrote Pres. Rasmusen of xania. Sent out circular Letter to Conf. Presidents in relation to Emigrants on. att. meeting at night. 7th wrote my son Lorenzo abt business. read Some tracts for reprinting, at ev. in Comp. with Elders & a frind att. the Kings Theater Elverhoi was played. The King was there a very plain but good looking man. 63 8th wrote to Pres. Nielsen Bergen & J.E. Kjar visited with Saints in the p.m. & att. Releif S. meeting in the evening. latter jojned a S. School class at sister Alma Christensens. 9th Buissey with acts. visited Sick, Administered to Br. Jens Olsen, wrote Pres. A.P. Nielsen, at ev Elder Lars Andersen brought the news that Elder Elias Andersen was very sick, I took steps for his Imideate return home Visited Nielsens on Kasarnen latter. 10th Sunday, att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings called latter at Christensen Family 11 att. to current & Yearly act. buisness, at ev. with Fr. Christensen & others beside The choir att. on invitation to sing & Lecture a Good Templer Lodge ‘Frovellry’ in Rysgade we were well recd. & had an invitation to come & speake in another on the 26th. 12th Att. to Office work. finished our Tithing records & sent to Bishop W.B. Preston recd. Tellegram from Pres Penrose to send Elder Elias Andersen on Tentome on the 20th from Liverpool. at ev. we had a feast at Hall. I was very unwell. but listened to programs. & took part in last hours play. 13th Office work and meeting at night Elder Elias Andersen came in Sick |
