Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 102, 1907 Aug. 12th Att. to current work. 8th Elders from the West arrived. Spent ev. with N.P. Nielsen Family. 13th Met & talked with the Elders each privatly, latter jointly & instructed them, & latter appointed them. in the ev. had an 1 ½ hours Talk with a reporter, who on a former meeting had been very rough, but now considerably softened down 14th current work & Study. att meeting in the ev. many strangers present, spoke 15th A. Very stormy day, went to Tivoly in the ev, its 64th aniversary, it was finely iluminated. & not far from 20000 People in attendance. 16th Att. to current buisness in a.m. & in p.m. Visited 2 Families, latter Relief society meeting. 17th Att. To buisness, reading & in p.m. & ev. Visited a Family N.J. Hansen. 18th Sunday. Att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings. latter on invitation went to visit a Fyen Family with a lot of other Elders & some Saints, 19th Att. to current buisness, in ev. att. a social of S. School Teachers, goten up by 103, Anerkism advocated Aug. Supt. Victor E. Madsen in honer of Several Teachers abt to Emigrate, spent a pleasant evning. 20th There were much buisness, which all had attention, at ev. att. mutual, after that a reporter Mr. Steensen waited on me. & confidentialy told me of his deplorable Life, also told me he was anarchist and advocated it as The Ideal tought, said Life was nothing, he would be glad of the chance, & willing to Kill any King or ruler & especialy the Zczar of Russia & give his own Life for it. I told him to repent and lead a better life, 21st Office work & Study all day, & at ev. att. meeting, many Strangrs present 22nd Att. to current buisness. wrote John & Sadie. (my children) at ev. att choir practice 23rd Some buisness, & Study, at ev. att a Preisthood meeting one Sister Swendsen was forgiven for transgresing the 6th commandment. 24th Att. to some buisness & in p.m. visited a Family nonmembers, on invitation. 25th Sunday, Att. S. School & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings, & latter visited with Br. Mork & spent a profitable time. 26th I with others visited in & arround Vebeck Sister Ottes relations. Contry beautiful |
