Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 64, 1907, go to Aarhus, at Randers. Elder Mirtensen Sick Feb 14 Office work. took bath. visited sick at ev. att. a birthday party at J. Hansens. Edith beeing 18 years. 15th At 9 a.m. with Elder F. Christensen took train for Aarhus. Elder Elias Andersen a sick Br. going with us as far as Fredericia on his return home. this is Nephew N.L. Lunds 38th birthday. arrived in Aarhus at 6 p.m. on invitation took Supper at P.S. Christiansens. att. a meeting at 8m Stayed at Office. 16th In the morning with Pres Nielsen went to Randers to visit Elder C. Mortensen, who was very sick. Doctor Saying it is Tuberculosis and The Lungs. I telegraphed to Pres. Penrose. wrote to Aalborg to have Elder O. Paulsen be ready to acompany Elder Mertensen. was invited to Bro. Shebys at ev. with many others, to celebrate Thier 1st year in the Church. This is a fine Inteligent & cultured Family, Spent a very pleasant evning, & I stayed there. 17th Sunday. took train for Aarhus att. 2 & 7 p.m. meetings, had Dinner at F. Samuelsens. While I were in Randers. Br. F. Christensen repaired the Branch Organ 65, Ret to Copenhagen, Yearly Statement of Buisness Feb 18th Took breakfast at Sister Hermansens & Train for Copenhagen at 12. arr at 8:50 found none Home, went to Families Christensen & Took Supper. 19th Bussey at Office all day & att Mutual at night. arranged for Sending Elder Mortensen home & Elder O. Paulsen to acompany him. 20th Office work. preparing for a Lecture I had to & did deliver in a ‘afholds’ Society on Tingveien 22. had a quartet along & was Kindly treated abt. 30 were present. Received Statement from my Son Lorenzo in regard to the Buisness. stating the yearly Transaction had been $135000.00 & the Interest on the Capital for the year was 55%. my personnal share was $3150.00 as a surplus having priviously had 700.00 or 10% and that after all my debts were paid there was a bal. in my favor of $2941.82 3 years since George Died 21st Office work & reading, at ev. Choir practice 22nd Wrote the 1st Presidency reporting Aarhus property. & other Things, at ev. att a Temperance meeting, We had a chair & Qeurtett & Br. F. Christensen gave a Lecture on Utah 23rd Wrote home to Wife & children also to Lorenzo diricting disposition of reported devidind |
